In the next few weeks and a time or two over the summer I will be scouting routes for the CFO.

For those familar with the area, list your favorite roads in this thread.

I will try to ride them and put a route or two together based on your ideas and other sources.

C'mon, whaddya got? :D

Hey Wheaton,

When I joined the FJR Forem I decided to use a more appropriate user name (used to be Hoistman).

I plan on trying to head up to Wisconsin hopefully several times this summer. I was even thinking about heading to the AMA superbike races at Road America.

I kept several maps from my HSTA(honda sports touring association) Wisconsin rides. Without a doubt Wisconsin has some of the best motorcycling roads in the country! ( you just have to attempt to avoid the cow patties!).

Hope thinks are going well for you and your family.

Craig

Hey Craig/hoistman/CWC05FJR,

Good to hear from you. Is CWC your initials? Or something else?

Yeah, WI has some pretty good roads to ride on. Best in the country? I don't know about that - but if some a yoos guys wants to foot the bill for a lttle cross-country research, I'm willin' to check it out. :D

Regarding WI roads, you gonna list some of your favorite HSTA roads here in this thread OR are you just teasin' me and gonna keep that your little secret.

I did a little overnighter in Sparta, WI this past Sat. night. and put about 470 miles each on Sat. and Sunday. I tried to avoid the roads I already knew were good (from riding before), and try new ones.

I will post the result of that trip in the Ride Reports section later today. I'm happy to report here that I have a smile frozen on my face from the good roads I did ride.

So as been asked before, POST YOUR FAVORITE WI ROADS HERE in this thread.

Last year this question came up. The general concensious from riders familiar with the area was that nearly ALL the roads are good! SW Wisconsin was spared from the glaciers of the last ice age. It is called the "drift area" where the last ice age deposited the rubble it scraped out of northern WIsconsin and Minnesota and Canada (hense the lakes up north...). The errosion patterns created by the many streams and rivers have cut the earth that lends itself to wonderful roads. You won't be dissapointed if you have never ridden these roads. This area is the closest thing I have to real roads. Coming from the MPLS metro area everything is flat so anything with hills and turns is good! :)

Have anything in mind for roads for us? Or are you going to share when we get thier? Makes no difference to me, was just wondering what was going on for roads for Saturday.

Is it possible for someone to have some printed maps of the area that we could mark up with some suggested roads.

Where would there be a good place to pick up/ buy a map of the state (Wisconsin of course)

@dev,

I will use MS Streets & Trips to plan a couple of routes (1 long & 1 short) for those that don't have their own route in mind. I will print out a route sheet for those that are interested.

All those that are interested, please PM me so I get a rough idea how many route sheets to bring. I know many know the area better than me, so I won't bring alot. So if you don't PM me, there may not be one for you...

Keep in mind that I did not ride much north and west of Sparta - just 1 day - so the routes will generally be south and west of Sparta. If you want to ride north and west of Sparta you will have to contact some of the MN riders or locals that know the area.

As has been stated before, WI Motorcycling website is your friend. If you are not familiar with the area - it will give you a summary of some the best roads in the area. You should buy a map of southwest WI during your trip to the area or beforehand.

Keep in mind that last year, I knew nothing about the area beforehand, but picked out a map and with a little word from opt8low that cnty P was a good road, figured out a decent route in about 10 to 15 minutes. We had a good time last year, except for the fact that it was hotter than all get out!

My routes will tend to weave back and forth east and west as you go north and south...if you do the same you should have a good time.

Regarding road conditions, I don't have the definitive word on chip and seal as I have not been up to cnty P lately, maybe a local on the board can help out with that. I do know that earlier in the summer, an east west road (WI 56) from the MI river to Viroqua was closed for road construction. The alternative to that is to use a cnty road or WI 82.

As a last comment, I have received some advice but not alot on this thread, therefore most of what my routes entail are from WI motorcycling - as confirmed by my own riding experience.

As has been stated before, you really can't go wrong if you want to take your own route and do a little homework by looking up the WI motorcycling website ahead of time. If you come to CFO, don't know the area and haven't checked out that website -shame on you...

@ huron:

I would think most gas stations or convenience stores in that area would have a map. I know that the gas station next to the La Crosse motel last year had some good maps. I still have mine - what happened to yours :D eh?

Sorry I don't think I had a map... There where us three canadians from word of mouth got us started last year. We did head south east and looped to the west across the state line and up along the river.

I guess you are right I will do my own homework and find some roads.

I really don't know what I was thinking.

Hey Tom,

You must really be in a hurry to get down to EOM :dribble: . Take a minute, pause, take a deep breath, think clear thoughts...and then reread my ENTIRE post - including what was addressed to dev. Your post talked about MAPS -not routes :p

There WILL be some suggestions for roads for you to ride, you HOSER eh!!

For a second I thought nobody would tell me where to go!

Unless I go with somebody elses route while I'm their. I'll probably just take one of your routes listed. I don't know any of the roads in Wis. So I'll take your word (or maps) as some good roads to take. I'm just playing it by ear when I get their. I'm not trying to be lazy. Well maybe I am.
