I was wondering if anyone knows what weight hypoid gear oil the FJR takes for the final drive. Yamaha calls out a part number not an oil.

You might try "gear oil" in the search. Amongst many I found this. Or for some entertaining reading enter "whale ****" in the search.

Welcome AZrider,

"Mobil1 75W-90 synthetic gear oil available from any auto parts store."

Taken directly from a post on page 5 of the NEPRT (never-ending pointless recurring threads) :D :D :D

Generically, it is EP (extreme pressure) or hypoid gear oil, GL-5 API rating. Brand doesn't really matter.

I changed mine yesterday. It was Yamaha Shaft Drive Gear Oil SAE 80W-90 API Service GL-4, GL-5.

Thanks, folks.

I'm here in Houston until tomorrow night and searched this site but couldn't find the weight. It was late (thanks to our congress and DST) and I knew, yes I knew  that it probably had been asked a bizzillion times (oils, syn vs dyno, gear oil etc are all the endless topics on all motorcycle sites).

Anyhow, thanks for the weight and GL5 rating. I know most motorcycle diferentials aren't real hypoids but the GL5 rating at 80W90 tells me what I need to know. I have a quart of Amsoil hypoid 80W90 GL5 rated gear oil in my garage at home.

So, here I am, stuck in Houston without my new bike................. When I went out to find some dinner last night there were bikes all over the place. I'm actually at Seabrook near the NASA facility (reason I'm here) and the weather is pretty nice.

Thanks!

Hey AZ

How much you pay for the quart of Amsoil hypoid 80W90 GL5 gear oil? I bought the Yamaha brand two weeks ago and pay $28 for half a quart at the dealer near my house. I think will be the last time.

I paid 7.21 plus tax for a quart of the Yamaha stuff when I bought the bike, regular price is 9.01 per quart. (SAE 80W-90 API SERVICE GL-4, GL-5 label under barcode reads ACC-SHAFT-DR-QT) Did they sell you some kind of overpriced synthetic or something?

While I am sure the oil you used will be fine, it is NOT the oil specified by Yamaha for the FJR1300. You need the special Whale ****. See below.

Pricey ***** ain't it? Most dealers will **** you for it. Got mine from Mike at University Motors. MUCH cheaper.

Yup. The *Whale ***** specified by Yamaha for the FJR1300. Sad thing is many, many, dealers probably don't even know it exists.

And so.....................here it is folks:

I bought the special oil specifically for the FJR (shown above) from Long Beach Motorsports ( I hate those guys ). The price tag said $24.95, yet they charged me on the receipt $31.95, wasn't even paying attention.

Then I saw the light (here on the forum). Mobil 1 synthetic 75/90 gear oil for $8.95, for a quart.

Returned the overpriced crap to Long Beach Motorsports and got my money back. Did I mention I hate those guys!

tried to buy some from dealer in CC he did not know it existed-parts manager indicated I had bad info-I asked he call Yamaha dealer support-which he did and they enlighten him-his excuse was they had only sold a couple of FJR's as this was a cruiser town sure have a good feeling about them doing any work on bike :glare:

Bel-Ray GearSaver 80-90W API-GL5 hypoid works great as well. So does their semi-synthetic oil for the engine. Been using Bel-Ray's products for years and a whole lot of race teams like it too so can't be that bad. PM. <>< :D
