I paid my $500 deposit to the first dealer on 1/12/06 for an FJR that had been ordered on 9/28/05 under the name of one of their employees. I was told March delivery. I did not bother the dealer until recently when I kept reading about people taking delivery of their bikes that had been ordered much later than the first day of the PDP. The dealer offered my deposit back, which I accepted (hopefully, the check is in the mail). I called the day before yesterday and made a credit card deposit over the phone to another dealer and picked my '06 up yesterday from the other dealer. I think the original dealer sold my bike, probably to someone who offered more money.

I was aggravated because I trailered my bike home in the rain and did not get to ride it yesterday. Maybe the rain was a good sign though if this bike is anything like radio antennas. I remember from my CB and Amateur Radio days that the best performing antennas were always put up in the rain or snow.

I am in the process of getting insurance quotes this morning and will be taking my first ride on an FJR in a couple of hours. I may snap a picture or two also.

Probably a good thing. You learned the hard way fast that dealer has no ethics. Avoid him/her like an ex-wife :D

I had to laugh at that old saw about radio antennas....too true. Are you still involved in Ham Radio? I am also a Ham and have been thinking about a removeable antenna install on my bike.

I had a job where I played radio all day so I got burned out for a while. The last operating I did was from the Piper Archer plane I owned at the time. I put the former ADF wire antenna back on the plane that stretched from the top of the tail to near the front of the cockpit and fed it with an MFJ tuner to an Icom 730. I cut the wire to be a 1/4 wavelength on 17m which is about 3/4 wavelength on 6m. I had a lot of fun with that setup but was surprised to learn that the added height while flying along at different altitudes didn't make much difference in skip type communications. I have a 180' tower for my 2-way business radios that is also where my broadband internet comes from. I started rigging up a remote one day using Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP), but got bogged down with some internet NAT versus Static IP issues and went back to working on something that would make me some money. I have not operated for a couple of years now.

Vulcan,

Wanted to also mention that I will be using a Yaesu VX-6R for bike-to-bike communications as soon as I get around to installing the Autocom on my FJR. I spent time riding it over the weekend instead of starting the modification process. I have thought about mounting a VHF/UHF mobile antenna on the luggage rack because the rubber duck seems to do a poor job when mounted on a bike as opposed to holding it in your hand with your body providing a partial ground plane. Have you ever tried grounding a handheld to the bike to see if would enhance the ground plane?
