OK. I got a new to me 05 FJR. 16,500miles on it. The manual wasn't available so I have questions that are probably answered in the manual. 96.6 miles the first ride. Just to get accustomed to the new bike. But mostly Short rides for now. Loads of questions as I learn this bike's characteristics and sounds. I don't know what normal is. So here are my questions. By the way, I love this bike. Seems like a great platform to build for me.
1. What gear/RPM for city traffic where the average speed limit is 40-45mph? The bike seems comfy in 3rd,4th and 5th. I chose 3rd, and 2nd when leaving from stop lights; I hit a bump last night after turning onto a bumpy street and almost launched myself into someone's living room. Throttle control ! Your own a supergo tourer boy.
2. Does the bike turn easier to the right than left? Seems like when I turn right from a stop, the handle bars almost turn themselves into the corner. But not so much turning left. This only seems apparent at less than 10mph
3. How long should I let the bike warm up before riding ? One bar of temperature on the digital gauge?
4. Is a swishing, whirring type sound typical of the front brakes? Wiiiiiiiishhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh until stop. Doesn't always make this sound. Doesn't seem to be related to speed. 5mph bumper to bumper or 70mph off a highway ramp, I hear the sound.
5. Ok so how was this windshield designed? For who? IF its low, I'm on a sport bike, If its a little higher my torso catches all the wind. A little higher the bugs find my face, a little higher the noise begins, all the way up the noise continues. I dip down behind the windshield and I experience the quietest ride I've ever heard, nothing put the harmonious purr of that engine. So, do I really have to buy a Cee Bailey, Givi, VStream etc etc. I'm 6 feet tall.
6. Ok so how was the seat to handle bar distance determined? I have back and neck problems and I have to lean forward just enough to not be completely comfortable. The Vstrom was perfect, I sat "in" the bike. My hands almost chest height. On the FJR, I feel like I'm sliding forward all the time, especially on hills. My seat is a Sargeant. Nice seat. But I can't reach the handle bars without leaning in. I need the bars an inch or 2 higher and 3-4 inches closer to me to give me the relaxed elbow feel I liked so much on the VStrom. The position I find myself in currently BEGS for me to ride just a little faster than good citizenship would allow. I don't want my elbows locked or to have to push myself back into the seat when decelerating (especially downhill.) What kind of risers do I get? Really don't want to spend a ton. My estimates of inches are purely estimates, perhaps less will do, I just don't know.
7. You guys really fit stuff in the side cases? My small laptop won't even fit. I don't have a top case. So, is there a side case made that is aerodynamically sound for "FJR speeds" and that can carry, at the least, a laptop? Perhaps I just need to add some kind of top-case. I don't think I need a two helmet case but I need to fit a backpack in there. Bigger sidecases? or Top cases?
8. Security-Anybody know the stats on stolen FJRs. My VStrom was agreed upon by VStrom riders as ugly. FJR is not-according to the swiveling heads over the last few days. Need I worry when traveling about the country? What do you guys do to keep your bike safe? Cables, alarms, location, VStrom motorcyle covers(lol) ??
9. Please explain tension, preload and anything else related to those two little black dials near my handle bars. DO the silver nuts/bolts do something as well ? Is this something you set before each ride or typically a rider preference that just gets set and forgotten about? When I go to the Dragon, what setting will provide the most control?
10. Which comes first - heated grips or hand guards? I plan to ride this bike until there is ice on the ground. I'm a thin guy and the coldest thing on my body is my fingers and ears-burning cold at 30degrees hands; will handguards do more than heated grips when wearing winter riding gloves.
11. What is a decent set of winter riding gloves that wont cause attention when I'm disrobing at the office. (Ladies please cheer now)
12. What's a decent set of cold weather boots that wont cause attention when I'm disrobing at the office. Perhaps I just need to leave office shoes under my desk and change during the day. (you guys are all well off and/or retired so maybe you just suit up for flight and disappear into the mountains)
13. (Is he really asking all these questions at once) Yes, I'm excited. Come on man, I've owned the phenom1300 for approx. 24ours. I can't think about much else but making her fit and function as perfect as the VStrom did-while cruising at FJR speeds.
14. What is the first thing I should do maintenance wise after purchasing a used bike? Change all the wet stuff and ride her hard?
15. What the hell is a PowerCommander? It does what exactly?
16. I want to be an FJR mechanic(of my own bike)? Where do I start-not having any experience other than changing the oil on my VStrom.?
17. Anyway to make the heat that comes off the engine distribute evenly on both sides of the bike?
18. Ouch, damn fairings are so close to my shins, I keep gouging myself. But I'm learning. What do frame sliders do? Necessary?
19. Once these Pirellis are done, what should I get that won't piss me off? I ride sensibly above the speed limit-within the tolerances of the badged ones. However, I have been leaning a bit more, desiring to see if I can get as low as Suzuki's Bautista. And of course now that my FJR crawls at speeds my Vstrom sweaed through, I'm gonna need a tire that will take me on LD rides and let me close the gap between my abilities and hte bikes abilities. (Again, I'm more of a tourer than a FJR-alete.) My Vstrom loved the Conti Road Attacks. Those things ran for miles.
20. Engine Braking? My Vstrom would almost stop as soon as I closed the throttle in any gear. If I down shifted, I would almost unge forward ont he bike. It made for some really cool (safe?) engine braking where I could use both engine and brakes. On the FJR, if I let go of the throttle the bike slows down (5mph !) and careens forward with no sign of stopping. So, if my brakes failed, how the heck would I stop the FJRocket? I guess thats a part of it's smoothness.
Thanks all,
nate
