Finally - Nikon D500 announced - looks nice

I know there are alot of part time photographers on the site here - so why not....

I've seen some amazing pictures with FJR's on this site many many times...

I'm far from professional but like to dabble, and I am continually learning. I jumped into my first DSLR with the Nikon D7000 - and the kit lens. Since then I've gathered a few nicer lenses along the way shooting racing events and some sports events, (GF's daughters VB, BB, FB). The D7000 was a nice starter, but would always run out of FPS shooting fast targets. Have been waiting around for a worthy upgrade without going full on stupid $$ with an FX body in the $4-6000 range.

The long awaited D300s Pro DX body replacment has finally made its way to us with the announcement of the D500, which looks to be on paper quite a nice improvement (albeit quite the entry fee), but it looks like on paper its got quite the laundry list of upgrades for a Pro DX model... Perfect meh, but alot of good for sports and wildlife shooting... Nice bridge for the more casual shooter between mid level and pro FX body's...

Needless to say, since I'm already somewhat heavily invested in Nikon with pro glass I'm a bit excited, as it falls right into a good deal of the needs for a new body I have. Anyone else been waiting for this unit, looking at upgrading their platforms ? I got one on preorder, and can't wait to try it out at the track with my 70-200 F2.8 VRII

Looks nice, I ponied up for a D750 last year and don't regret it one bit. A fantastic camera!

Was in that same conundrum myself until this announcement - was literally trying to figure out what I was going to get if there was no announcement in the DX market from CES, the D750 was top on the list, but I like the reach I'm getting with the D7000 and my 70-200, though the D7K quickly runs out of steam when trying to get high speed burst on the fast moving objects. I have enough decent DX lenses, bought at a steal from a Photographer buddy, which I'd have to replace at further cost then just moving to a FX body....

D500 will have a good deal of options that will be beyond me for at first, but a platform that will last me for some time to come.

I agree with your reasoning, but I wasn't invested in any DSLR at the time of the D750 purchase. I looked at what was available from Nikon/Canon/Sony et al in the crop format, but found nothing to my liking. Full frame - it was pretty much D750 hands down. I could have waited another year to see if anything showed up on the crop sensor field, but decided to just pull the trigger on the D750 FX.

Like I have said, I don't regret it at all.

Do these not have a built-in flash? Not that familiar with Nikon being a Canon guy myself.

Happy to see the announcement, and I expected it.

All the hoopla on my FB groups and photo forums is that DX is dead, there's no reason to keep it around, blah blah blah. Then Nikon comes out with a few rather nice new DX lenses, making everyone go, "Huh?"

This camera is the reason those nice new DX lenses exist.

FX has its superiorities, Its larger sensor means larger sensor pixels, which certainly helps with low-light/high-ISO shooting. Depth of field and field of view is what long-term 35mm film users expect from a camera. I shoot a D7000, and I like the reach the smaller sensor gives me. Sure, I could shoot FX and just crop, but FX simply costs more for similar performance, camera and glass both. I've been itching to figure out how to get a D810 (although now the D850 is on the way) and finding I'd probably have to "settle" for a D750, even though that's still out of reach for a while. Now here's the D500, effectively the same money as a D750.

Things that make you go, "Hmmmm-m-m-m-m-m....."

My D7000 was second hand. with a shutter count under 1500. It's over 57000 now, so I've gotten my money's worth so far.... Still, more than 9 frames of continuous shooting would be great at air shows and races! Bracketing more than 3 shots might be kinda nice, too! And I have a couple of fun DX lenses that I could keep!

bergmen, the D500 does not have a built-in flash. I've seen it speculated that the omission is due to the target market, wildlife and sports shooters.
