On my last road trip I was fortunate in being able to save a vehicle which had caught fire. I was running down I59 South in Mississippi just north of Heidlburg running about 100 when I topped a hill to see a truck pulled over to the side and a lady and two children running for the side of the road. Young man was popping the hood and smoke and flames were comin out left side near windshield. I geared it down hit the brakes... stopped about 30 yards in front, tossed my helment and reached for my trusty 1 liter rootbeer I ride with...... Running and shaking it as fast as I could I got to the truck popped the top and sprayed out the fire.... Continued to cool the spot with water from the windshield cleaner tank until the local fire department arrived.... I explained what I did and what I thought the cause was, wish them all well and away I went...

While the rootbeer worked well, my question here is:

Anyone know of a small fire extinguisher that would fit in and be safe to store in the factory addon trunk of the FJR1300?

1 Concern is the heat in the box while sitting in the sun.

:: Sidenote as to the cause of the fire. Some people place place containers of brake fluid, power steering fluid and such under the freaking hood of their vehicle for easy storage!!! DUH! Well from what I gathered, it looked like a brake fluid contanier had been stuck under the hood near the windshield UPSIDE DOWN... and dripped fluid down the firewall and unto the crankcase of the four wheel drive unit... The vehicle was towing a trailer and another vehicle way too big, the gear box heated up and the brake fluid went poof!!!

Here's a unit that's small, rated C-D (flammable liquids and electrical fires), but not cheap. Measures 8 1/2 x 2 inches. Larger units also available.

Hey, Toecutter! This should be right up your alley. Do you have any suggestions for this?

I always carry Pepsi - does Root Beer do a better job? Aay auto parts store has small(ish) fire extingushers that could easily be carried on your bike.

Size really does count when it comes to fire extinguishers and the little ones are really just to help you get out asap. If you can get to it, if you have presence of mind to use it, and if you meet both of those criteria, what the heck are you still doing there in the first place?

Glad you put out their fire and good trick with the soda, but I've investigated enough fires that my philosophy is that it's time to make sure the vehicle is empty. Clear the occupants and let it go. Once a vehicle fire begins and absolutely once it's got a foot-hold, the insurance company either owns it or you'll want them to.
