Firefox 2.0 was released today. If you're using 1.5 or older, you may be interested. Here's why, in the release notes. If you don't care about stinkin' release notes and you just want to download, you can get Firefox 2.0 here for free, as usual.

If you're still using IE, you're already screwed, so just skip the installation all together.

I downloaded yesterday and so far the forum works just fine on it. Tabbed browsing rocks.

Ah, come on Ari, IE7 blows FF2.0 outta da water!! :p Matter of fact, it looks *just like* FireFox  . Give ol BillieBoy's product a chance, eh? :clapping:

Yeah and they're already finding virus vectors in IE7 (I get the trade pubs).

If you want safer browsing use Firefox or Opera, not the virus magnet IE. I just spent 4 hours today trying to un-virus a customer's XP machine, and I'm still not done. There were 40+ different viruses & spybots in this system, and some of them could even come back after the anti-virus/spyware programs ID'd & 'removed' them. Once one of them gets in the front door, more viruses just seem to get invited right in.

Me ? I run Linux. Viruses/spybots since 1998 ? Zero.

Linux market share = 0.032%? Isn't that like saying accident rates for 1963 green convertible volkswagen beetles is less than for Ford F250 pick up trucks? :p If Linux had market share, more black hats would attack...

That's true DC... Linux and Firefox have vulns., but it's such a small market share, they don't usually bother. They can write an exploit for anything Microsoft and have a much bigger target for the same amount of work.

+1 this morning, and now I notice that there is a spellcheck when in a post composing window. BTW, spell check is apparently two words. This could go a long way toward curbing the rampant illiteracy on the internet, NOT!

Yes, I noticed the spell check happening. Took me by surprise. I wasn't sure if it came with the updated browser or if the forum software had been updated. I like it.

I just noticed that myself. VERRRRRRY COOOOOOL (which highlight those two words, but at least I know I misspelled them). What's most impressive is that it knows which places to spell check....like what I'm typing now, but not other parts of the web page.

I highly recommend!

+1 seems like it works great, should last a long time.

howdooo it check spellin'? it does not seeem to work on myne. although it's inabled -- it hasent hilited anything for me yet...

until 2.1 that is...

Well, I installed firefox 2.0 about 10 minutes after Ari posted his message. After a week or so of use, I'm completely fed up with it. It's contstanly eating 50 percent of my processor and a min of 50 megs of ram, even doing nothing. It's super-slow, locks up my computer, and has got me using I.E. again (first time in YEARS).

Is anyone else having this problem, or is it just me?

No lock ups, not slow, tiny cpu usage. You got something going, but damned if I know what.

Some of the add-on extensions for Firefox can cause problems with memory usage and bog down the cpu.

If you run the vanilla FF with few extensions you shouldn't have problems.

Default theme, no extension.

Un-installed an re-installed, still the exact same issues. Seems in-particular really really REALLY reluctant to switch between tabs.

That's weird. I've used FF through its many iterations and I've had no problems to speak of.

Generally speaking, it's not as polished as IE.

It might help if you started from scratch with a new profile. You'd lose your bookmarks, setup choices, etc.

Yeah, I've noticed it's a bit lock-up prone on me. Similar problem I had with 1.4 or some version a few back. For me it will just lock up with an hourglass and I'll have to close down the process and restart. For me it hasn't quite sent me back to IE, but something's up. Had it happen on 2 of my 3 computers.....all pretty much installed and configured the same way.
