I might not get a chance to bring her in for the first service before going on my road trip so I want to change the oil and filter myself. I have 300 miles on her now. What oil should I use? Thanks

oh no...

I don't think Yamaha has a leg to stand on if you were to have any warranty issues and you used Yamalube, just be sure to keep all of your receipts whichever brand you choose. The operator's manual shows which grades are recommended.

When I got my FJR at D & H Cycle they sold me Kawasaki oil for the first change.

Don't know if they sell Yamalube.

The typical multi-brand dealer probably only sells one brand of engine oil.

My local Yamaha dealer only sells Honda oil.

Damn. It's only Wednesday Tuesday. Oh well, in for a pound ........

I love my FJR, and so ONLY use oil made from beluga whales (important that they've reached sexual maturity) imported from Norway. You can find it as cheap as $550 a liter on ebay. (Norway's metric.)

Now that detente has come around, the Russians are selling theirs cheaply, seen it as low as $300 a liter, but I just don't think it's pure beluga oil. I think they're mixing in oils from seals and otters.

<edit ten mins later> Didya read the manual? Or any other oil threads on this Forum?

Admin must be napping- in before NEPERT!

I say since you waited too long, just go to your local dealer and buy YamaLube. Look in your owners manual for appropriate weight. While there pick up a bottle of final drive oil and change that too.

And learn from this Grasshoppah- never, ever wait to do anything within 2 weeks of a trip. What if something goes wrong, like you strip a drain plug thread? Then you gotta rushrushrush to fix it or get it fixed. And judging from your post you're not a wrench type o' guy so your gonna stress the whole trip wondering if it was done right b/c it was a rush-job and even though you paid out the wazoo you gotta wonder if it was done absolutely correctly and is it gonna last or is it gonna leave you stranded in the middle of Bumfuck, PennsylTucky. Wait, what's that? Banjos? Uh-oh...

Or you could forget I said anything about it and just get the oils and filter and do it.

I would say that you should use some oil in the range recommended by Mammy yammy...and do some reading online. I hear there's a good Forum for FJRs that has a Bin O Facts already set up for you.

Wow! That is the nicest I have ever seen Wheatie be to ANYONE! You must be special. He regularly gives me **** and then talks about my wife.
You are such a fookin whiny ******* and I have NEVER talked about your wife. I don't know where the wires have gotten crossed, but man, you think everything I say about you is negative. I just tease my friends...but I promise I won't anymore.

But hey, thanks for the complement!
