I was 25 miles into my "reserve" fuel countdown when I filled up this AM. 230 miles on 5 gals. Great mpg despite my "break in" flogging and brake pad bedding runs. I was surprised that the fuel count down came on at around 200 miles. Dang, another 1.6 gls to go should give nearly 90 miles of countdown (using up the fumes too, of course). Sorry, no point to this post other than the fuel countdown seems awfully premature.

Anybody else experience this?

Of course this is an individual thing, but I would say yours comes on earlier than most.

25 miles into reserve counter would lead closer to a 5.8 - 5.9 gallon fill on most FJRs IMHO. 50-60 miles is the most I would personally push it on reserve.

Did it trip pre-maturely because you had it on the sidestand?

I'm closer to Skooter on my experience. Riding flat and level I tend to have my bars flash at the 1.1 gallons remaining (because I then fill up with 5.5 gallons). Ran it once for 32 miles after flashing and filled up with 6.33 gallons, and that was as close as I wanted to temp fate without an aux. cell. (That was at about mile 1200 on the Utah 1088)

My '05 starts to count down when there is about 1 gallon left.

Keep in mind that the fuel pump is in the fuel tank and it is cooled by the fuel. If you habitually let your tank run low you will be stressing that pump.

And if you do run out of fuel, with FI it could be a real bear to get the mochine running again. PM. <>< <_<

Fuel pump is cooled by the fuel going through it, not the fuel in the tank around it.

F.I. runs high presure 40-45lbs. it will have no problem on restart after running dry. Might take a few seconds longer but no issues. If in doubt cycle key a few times to build pressure.

Doesn't work like a brake system. no need to bleed anything.

Mine also usually comes on around the five gallon mark. Last time I got my "warning" I rode another 86 miles and I had to put in 6.55 gallons.

I wonder if I was cutting it a little close... and you know I almost passed the gas station for the one closer to my home another 10 miles down the road!

You went 86 miles on reserve?!! Wow, nice to know we have some lengthy safety margin, but, yeah, that was cutting it pretty tight.

"Cougar! Cougar! We're on vapor, Cougar"

My countdown starts 5 gallons in also.

Acceleration becomes problematic when you're really running on fumes. Twist and the gas moves to the rear of the tank away from the pickup. Kinda like hitting the rev limiter only worse. The closer you get to empty the worse it gets.

Thanks for the info, all of you. This is good to know for those looong stretches of Hiway 50 in Nevada ... or from I-80 north through Nev and Oregon. Stretches of 220-250 miles with NO GAS at all. Helluva place to walk too.

When my fuel gauge starts blinking I fill up and find that it takes between 4.4 and 4.7 gal to fill.

Assuming I didn't get a short tank, or no one left a tennis ball inside, that's 2. gals of reserve, which is excessive, IMO.

Am I doing something wrong?

The only thing you are doing wrong is crying about it. ;) On the fun side....you sure got a lot of clowns out there to post up on their fuel escapades. :yahoo:

Your Kunuter valves need to be adjusted...

Just curious, What year is your FJR? I was wondering if possibly a different tank (setup) on the 06's.

I'd go with the tennis ball theory. Or, aliens have invaded the fuel tank and need some "breathing room".
