Bought a used FJR 2008 in September. First bike! I know, the “bit off more than I can chew" advice. But after a few months, there are NO regrets. What a ride!

Posting this message to let you know I did take a few motorcycle classes and rented a big Goldwing because I thought that is what I wanted before getting the FJR. I accidentally found out about the FJR. Researched it and said that’s the one!

When I rode it from the dealer, I did have thoughts of “Oh My God…I’m going to kill myself…Whoa, Big Girl!” However, after riding it around the nearby residential neighborhood for an hour, I tamed her and we rode our 20 miles home. By the time I got home I was in the car pool lane hollering “Yee-haa!”

Since then, I’ve visited many cities. I live in Los Angeles County and have gone to San Diego a couple of times, Palm Springs and Sacramento…and a lot of places in between. Lookin’ forward to some fun and exciting rides. What a Bike!

Forgot to mention…I’m 61 years old!

Hey dbm, congrats on the new bike and welcome to the forum. If it helps, I think you're really old because I'm only 50.

Enjoy the new bike! One day you'll end up halfway across the country and asking yourself, how'd I get here... ;) Lots of good folks and information on the forum, be sure and take advantage of the collective knowledge.

Los Angeles County? What parts? I called that part of CA home for nearly a quarter century. :)

My FJR was my freeway beast for many a lane splitting session and commute to Downtown LA. Have fun with your traveling machine. If you haven't done it already, a ride down to Julian for some apple pie and a jaunt through Palomar Mountain is in order!

Congrats on buying the FJR. These powerful bikes have two personalities. You can choose the personality you prefer by throttle management. What I mean is that the FJR can be as tame as a kitten or it can be a be an angry Tiger with a baaad attitude and kick some severe ass. Experienced riders know when and how to manage these contrary personalities and enjoy the machine to its fullest. Enjoy the ride.

:clapping: Welcvome to the forum. :clapping:

1.) Yer jist a kid!

Around here it doesn't matter how old you are...only that you are riding and enjoying life.

2.) Are you going to join us in Death Valley?

Death Valley Wildflower Ride, March 11-13

It'd be a great time to meet some of the zany..er...wild and crazy...uhm...other FJR owners from CA and the Southwest.

WARNING: Many of them ride like the wind (You know who you are!) but it's still a great time.

dbm, welcome and hope you enjoy your FJR. It's a handfull for a beginner, but just be carefull and take your time getting used to it. It takes me about a year to feel really comfortable on a new bike. I also have a 2008 model and am 58. Good luck to you.

Congratulations on your great purchase! I went straight to a 2008 FJR and like you just took it easy and let my skills develop. Man it was hard but throttle control has paid off and I can't image a better machine.

Ride Safe and Enjoy!

What do you want? A medal? In this forum, you're still a young whipper-snapper! Lots of us geezers here.

Thanks for the reality check, Karmak!

I am as young as I think I am...
https://www.fjrforum.com/forum//index.php?showtopic=134691 Welcome aboard dbm, you'll enjoy our FJR Forum (I'm 62!). Lots of good people here and plenty of good information on maintaining and farkling your FJR. Consider yourself cordially invited to SW-FOG 2011, held in Taos, New Mexico September 6-9; large FJR gathering with good times and big laughs!

I live in Cerritos. About 10 miles from Disneyland. Thanks for the ride suggestion...will put it on my Garmin as one of my routes to do.

That's some good advice, FJR Bill. I've found that riding nice and easy is relaxing and enjoyable...BUT when push comes to shove...FJR can move in a hurry to get around and ahead of those who want to be a little too close for comfort.

.

Welcome, dbm. Sounds like you've put on some freeway miles, but your FJR wants to get off those slabs. Can't you feel it? Doesn't it pull toward the exits when you ride past some mountain road turnoff? Let it have its head. You'll like it.

And jump into some group rides and get-togethers. The folks will explain "farkling" to ya.

+1

You're bringing back memories here. The FJR is my first bike, and I brought it three years ago when I was 61. Not coincidentally, I'm 57 now.
