The other problem with NOTGATT is that it drives up our insurance rates. That was a huge hit to the budget when I moved here last year.
Crashing is what drives up insurance rates. :D
Actually, Insurance companies drive up insurance rates regardless of any external stimulus.

Look around. Who owns a lot of the biggest buildings in the cities these days?

Where did you move from? I think the population density and crime rates have much more to do with insurance rates than crash statistics. When I moved to Northern Colorado from the Chicago suburbs my insurance rates dropped immensely. Granted, at the time it was on car insurance and not motorcycle insurance, as at the time I only had dirt bikes. But when comparing bike insurance to my buddies that still live there, mine is substantially less.

Moved from SoCal to Nevada to Arizona, SoCal and Nevada were pretty close, Arizona is close to double.

Nice Tat! Looks like a grown woman to me. If she ever goes down then she'll realize the benefit of wearing actual riding gear. Until then adults will continue to make up their own minds as to what to wear.

Question for all you hardcore AGATT folks that live in Non-Helmet law states (FL, SC, OH...etc): (not that you would care) But do other riders look at you like your the insane one because not only do you wear a DOT approved helmet but you also don all the other riding gear?

When I've been to Florida before its like a completely different riding culture than GA. Everybody down there is in shorts, tank tops & no helmets. While it's their choice to do so I don't like I could ever bring myself to ride like that.

I'm a Floridian ATTGAT, and while ATTGAT brothers are few, I see a lot of good helmets, and a few jackets being worn, but mostly jeans and sneakers. Completely useless as protection.

I also see a f$%K-lot of helmets being carried on the side of the bike. Just can't figure what's up with that? Do they think it's a slider to protect the bodywork?

I am in Florida as well. I wear ATGATT. Most everyone I know and ride with do as well. The main people that ride without gear are the Harley and cruiser crowd. I have never been able to figure it out. If you buy a 20-30 grand motorcycle with all the chrome goodies, you would be expected to have a good job and hence a good education. But then you buy that expensive Harley and I guess you want everyone to see it is you who is on it. I guess vanity is much more important than safety. Just makes no sense at all to me.

Not unusual attire on the Dragon at least on a summer weekend. They probably are not pushing

the limit of traction. Yes **** can happen but if they get run over by a semi the only people that will

care if they were ATGATT is the clean up crew. For some reason I always thought the saying about

ride you own ride meant just that.

"Ride your own ride" means to stay within your own riding abilities, for safety's sake. Don't get caught up in the thrill of the moment and let your ego get you in over your head.

It doesn't mean "Mind your own business."

If a few gentle (or not) chides and reminders can get someone wearing the protective PPE that will later save their skin in a lay-down later on, well it's surely worth the chance of alienation, isn't it?

This weekend one of the riders at NERDS put her bike down, at a fairly low speed, due to a road condition (poorly filled pot hole).

But the good news was that she was wearing the right gear, possibly due to peer (and husband) pressure. Her bruises would have certainly been open wounds, definitely a trip to the ER, and possibly marring her skin for the remainder of her life, had she not been a little warm in her power ranger outfit.

No... It's not the same thing at all.

Hey Fred I am glad your rider is okay and walked away with just bruises. Thanks for posting the traditional meaning of Ride Your Own Ride for those

that didn't know. I do understand a push or a little peer pressure can be a good thing in regards to PPE. What I don't like is when PPE is used to

distinguish oneself from of riders, that somehow it makes us better or smarter than them. You would think at my age I would be use to people

wanting to feel they are better than someone instead of just having respect for each other. So I am going to suggest to those that are able to

expand your definition of "Ride Your Own Ride".

BTW I may have been the only South Carolina Chapter President of a Star Touring and Riding Group to wear

a FF helmet. I do understand peer pressure the good, the bad and the ugly of it.

Dave

Well, I would never say that I am any better than anyone else. But I do think that it is smarter to take appropriate precautions against something as likely to happen as a motorcycle get-off. It is just plain foolish to think that it can not / will never happen to you. I guess that assumes that you would want to live as long as possible and with all of your original skin intact.

I'm moving to SC in a few years...bringing my helmet and gear with me. ;)
Where you moving to? I'm a Chicago 'burb transplant and live in Greenville area now. You'll like the mountains down here. Hopefully you'll be up this direction.
Yeah, looking to move to the Greenville area...assuming they have need for structural engineers down there...besides Bubba with a hammer and nails. :D

Greenville, SC is a very nice area, nice downtown and about 45 minutes from the mountains...but I assume you already know all of that! :D It's a very nice place to live with a good climate & location.
