Thanks for the link. Yeah, I think I'd enjoy the gearing as well even though I have no problem with the current gearing in 5th. I was joking about it being geared too high for cruise ;)

My 2015 has no problem maintaining whatever cruise speed is set (35 mph or 85 mph) in whatever gear I have selected. Caveat: The engine's turning higher than 4,000 rpm while using cruise control. No 6th gear needed.

Using the link that Constant Mesh gave I was able to get the gear ratios for the 2016, and it appears the sixth gear will reduce that 4000 rpm to about 3650. The FJR has such good midrange I doubt it'll matter much, but I'd like to ride one.

I downloaded the 2016 manual from the UK site.
https://www.yamaha-motor.eu/uk/services/owner-manuals/index.aspx

The text I highlighted was in the cruise section under the heading "TIP" page 3-9.

I would enjoy the gearing on the 2016. It would get my cruising rpm down a few hundred rpm below 4K which would be good.
Apologies for my skeptisism, yes it is there, but in all the time I've used the cruise control, I've never encountered that situation. And I've been up a few hills. I strongly suspect that would only occur at a speed and load where the engine would be lugging, I would never have let it get into that state.

For gearing, see posts starting around here, also this on my web site.

I will repeat some of what I (and others) said earlier. This motorcycle has enough torque and the cruise control works so well that it would be difficult to find a situation where the grade was so steep and the speed so low that the cruise control could not maintain that speed.

If the OP is considering moving toward a newer FJR and is simply curious, I can understand that. Let me assure the OP and anyone else who is curious about the FJR Cruise Control that it works EXTREMELY well. On my ride with Pop last Friday I was telling him that the FJR CC is simply the best CC of any vehicle I have ever operated. It works perfectly.

On the other hand... If the idea of having to twist the throttle manually to maintain velocity while climbing a steep hill is an issue for you, perhaps the FJR is not for you. If the effort and aggravation of twisting the throttle is too much, I am sure Vespa has a model that will suit your needs.

I've made that comment to several. My FJR has the best cruise control I've ever had on anything car or motorcycle. It engages immediately when set and it returns to the set speed perfectly when accelerated and released or resumed. My Goldwing was awful in comparison.

Since it has been brought up, I am curious what the CC throttle limit actually is to resume or maintain the set speed. I accidentally hit the resume button after I'd canceled it due to traffic and she immediately jumped toward 80 with a pretty solid pull. Almost like when I manually open her up for a 2-car pass. Luckily, I'm not the type to tailgate and had plenty of time to cancel before eating the bumper ahead of me, but I think it went from 50 to 60 in under a second. (And before you ask, at the slower speeds, my grip warmers were getting too warm, my thumb hit resume on it's way up to turn down the heat)

I have an '04 so I don't have Yamaha cruise.
I was reading this excerpt from the 2016 FJR manual.

"If this occurs, accelerate to the desired traveling speed using the throttle."

This sentence seems a bit odd to me since the throttle and CC are directly controlled by the computer. I couldn't see how the rider could do something with the throttle which the CC couldn't do. It's all software.

I'm assuming the CC is limited on % throttle.

I haven't experienced the Yamaha cruise. Does the throttle grip remain at the closed position when the cruise is in control? When you accelerate using the grip while in cruise does the grip have to turn a bit from its closed position before any acceleration occurs? Or, as soon as you begin to rotate the grip acceleration begins?

Throttle by wire can be anything I guess. It's all up to the software. I haven't experienced it.
OK Constant Mesh, you started this whole back and forth. It is time for you to get down to your local Yamaha dealer and put in an order for a Gen3.5!! Put that antique 2004 out to pasture. You can then take the 2016 out and get first hand input on the CC capabilities and give us a full report. Issue settled!! ?????????????
