Great ride report and thank for sharing Don! Some day......
Fontanaman, ynotride, Gorgeous George, Marcus and Hudson: From October 5 through 13, a Saturday through the following Sunday, I am leading Miguel Viejo (Old Michael), El Grande Dane (Dr. Rich) and your Grandfather Niehart (Dave B.) to Mulege in Baja California Sur, Mexico.

This is going to be a rough and tough "Guy's Ride", not saying that las Mujeres are excluded (I would even let HotRodZilla and patch308 ride along!) however it is definitely an "Econo Budget" ride South of the Border! This recent trip had $200 USD a night rooms and $75 USD dinners.

October's ride consists of $50 a night rooms and we'll be eating off of the street food carts for $5. I'll be on my 2013 FJR and we'll be riding dirt!

Great RR & photos! Glad you all had a fun and safe trip -- and the chain lasted!
Muchas Gracias Señor Bret, more feedback on the GS chain situation:

======================================================================================================

From Ponch: Here is a link that shows the differences: https://www.moto-chains.com/site/898528/page/578189#.URQUOI45Q20

The pitch is the same among a series, so 5xx has a 5/8" pitch, 6xx has a 3/4" and 4xx is 1/2". I suppose if you change the sprockets, any chain would work...I remember my KZ1000 had a 630 chain. That was a big sucker.

From DaveO: With the new chains, 16k is not unusual mileage.
If chain rattles, O-rings are gone, sprocket teeth are cupped then its time. You can also ck for stretch by rotating it slowly & watching how chain lays in rear sprocket.

I good quality chain may get 25K assuming you keep proper tension, good sprockets, inspect & lube, & don't beat the crap out of it.

From Brian "El Jefe": So, that 530 would have probably worked, with just an extra 1/32 on each side of the sprocket.

From Smilin Brad: I've been thinking about chains lately and have a few observations to share.

The chains on my F650GS never lasted longer than 10,000 miles.

I could flip the sprockets, put on a new one and get about 8,000 that way.

I used chain wax liberally to keep it quiet and lubed (I thought)

Last year I was riding my CB750C (1981) with the chain that came with it (6 years old, mileage unknown)

The Honda has about the same power as the 800cc in the GS and weighs about the same.

I put 8,000 on the Honda and never even needed to adjust the chain.

I used some El-cheapo chain lube I bought at O'Reihle's Auto Parts.

For obvious reasons, I never tried to clean it!!!!

I think the Honda chain is a 530.

Oh, my GS chain was replaced at Victory. Not when I complained about the quality of the stock one but after a NHSA ordered recall.

Mary Ellen was a total delight to travel with, we all loved riding Mexico with our MEM! Not a whiner or complainer: Like HotRodZilla, patch308 and Bustanut joker!

What a great ride report, kinda makes a guy feel like he was there.

The best part is the pictures pale compared to the real thing. And the pictures are great. Just got home, 7000 miles on the bike and in the truck and I'm ready to do it again.

If any of you get a chance, take Don up on one of these rides.

Great report! Looks like fun! Thanks! When are you going back to do the off road version?
See post #42.
Hola Russ, the ride next October will be set up for FJR's, but there will be some dirt road riding. I can set up alternate tracks for you to meet up with us though, if you find a wingman like Scott - fjrrider to pair up with you. For example, when we leave Ensenada for Bahia de Los Angeles on Mexico Route One: I can lay out a route for you and Q-Tip that is dirt roads all the way, then you simply meet up with us at Villa Vitti Hotel in Bay of LA. When we stay in Mulege, you and that big Texan could ride Scorpion Bay-Bahia San Juanico.

https://www.motorvike.com/Baja_Trip.html Russ, now that I've had my morning coffee; I have to do oil/filter changes and tune ups on Mary Ellen's FZ6 and my BMW GS today so I'm up really early, I've come up with a better plan.

If you and Q-Tip wanted to trailer your off road bikes to mi Casa en Chandler next Winter I could put together a 5 day dirt tour of Northern Baja that would me mas Excelente. We'd ride and stay overnight at all the classic dirt bike ride stops of North Baja: Rancho Santa Veronica, Mike's Sky Rancho, Puertecitos and Coco's Corner at Bahia San Luis Gonzaga. Nice 200 mile days. We could invite yamafitter along, even though Bill F. rides dirt like *****! Tucson Joe could look after him!

Another nice Baja California dirt ride video here, maybe our patch308 can learn something by watching it!

Beemerdons, I thank you for this most excellent Ride Report. I have been putting off reading it until I had enough time to sit down and read the whole thing at once. I truly enjoyed the pics and commentary on a country I have never visited. As a favor to the forum you should definitely make more trips and write more reports.

Oh, I did notice that the boat you all rode in was fitted with a Yamaha engine. Confidence inspiring, yes?

I've not talked to Scott since his Peru trip. His Spanish oughta be purdy good, and Baja is on both of our bucket lists. It usually doesn't take much to get him to go anywhere. And we'd need YamaBill along to keep from getting lost!

Hmmm....

A year from now rushes, next February, would work perfectly for Papa Chuy Viejo. In Summer of 2014 I have a huge and expensive motorcycle ride of Ireland and Scotland planned. Definitely have to include YamaBill on the 2014 Baja Bucket List Ride, Tucson Joe would be broken hearted if yamafitter wasn't there!
