almost everything else has been diagnosed. Low compression in #1 and #2 cyls. Running so rich on those 2 that its off the chart. My mileage had dropped by 5 mpg. Ignition coils to be checked next, injectors then ECU last. Oh 39000 miles and valves were spot on. Will post more when I know.

Scratching my head trying to understand the correlation between a failing ECU and low compression. Sounds mechanical, not electrical.

Let me re-word that. Low vacuum on 1 and 2. I'm not a mechanic so not sure if that has anything to do with ECU or not.

It didn't happen to be making a ticking noise did it? :erm: Maybe it's just a coincidence that cylinders 1 & 2 have low vacuum and that is just where the tick lives.

There are a bunch of things that can cause the low vacuum -- loose spark plugs, stuck or dirty injectors, head gasket, intake leak, someone fiddling with the sync and/or butterflies, mouse nest in the air box (should effect #3 & #4 too), etc. One thing you should be able to rule out is the ECU, there is a very, very outside chance the ECU is telling the injectors to stay open.

You can see low compression in cylinders that have been washed down with gas. People don't realize the role of oil in ring sealing, or lack of same. This is why, when doing compression tests, a teaspoon of oil is added to the suspect cylinder. The oil helps the rings seal, possibly eliminating them as the cause. Also why junked oil (as in very used) in the short term can be one cause of poor performance.

No ticking. According to the Svc Mgr, cylinders 1 and 4 are somewhat connected as are 2 and 3. He's at a loss as to why 1 and 2 are affected and not 3 and 4 also. Everything mechanical checks out so far. Glad I have the Y.E.S. Really miss my bike, been riding my sons 1200 Bandit in the mean time.

Once again Rad is right.

However, what StexFJR said was:

Details, details

New injectors and ECU have been ordered. Should be here by Thu Apr. 13th. I"ll keep the list informed of progress.

Dang Dewayne, this sucks.

Just found this thread. Sorry that you are having problems with your FJR like this.

That Bandit is a mean bike, but I prefer the FJR. How old is your son?

Do keep us posted.

Scott

Brian's 26, got a great deal on the bandit and its been a hoot to ride and it LOVES the TON!!

He's been riding for a bit but still doesn't have the bug like I do. He got a great deal on the Bandit. 2001 with 5000 miles on it. Was ridden by one of my buddy's wife. 3 grand is what he paid for it.

Cool, my oldest just turned 22, how time flies.

He will be graduating from UT Austin on May 19.

He plans to go to liar school.... uhh.... I mean law school. :D

Besides the 5 mpg drop in mileage, what other symptoms did your bike have and did you notice it right away?

They will be changing the oil as well?

Scott, I noticed the bike was running very rough, esp at idle. While trucking down the road it ran okay, but at idle it just didn't sound right. I changed the iridium plugs which didn't help. Also I checked the TBS and #1 was only about half of where it should be and was unadjustable, thats when I knew I needed to take it in. While at the dealer I've had them change the clutch and brake fluid. I had done an oil change a few days prior to taking it in so no that won't be done. After I get it back it should be like new, new brake pads (like a month ago), checked valves, radiator fluid, injectors and ECU. Oh and both headlights went out and were replaced in the last month. I really miss that FJR. I know they're hurrying the best they can. Sure glad I bought that YES.

Been a while since I posted an update on the FJR. Been waiting on parts for a couple of weeks. The ECU is coming out of Japan.

They tore my bike down again today, just to double

check, they found a bad atmospheric sensor and pulled up a fault code (finally) that pointed to the ECU, parts should start arriving on Tuesday the 25th.

Still all looks under warranty.

Whew.

Hey Scott, ECU and Injectors showed up on Friday, but no gaskets and o-rings for the injectors. Hopefully they'll show up on Tuesday when the dealership re-opens. Will be w/o the FJR for 6 weeks on Tuesday.

thanks for asking,

Dewayne

All parts are in (May 3rd) bike supposed to be repaired today. It will be dyno'ed afterwards, I'll have a full report as soon as I get the FJR back.
