I know the codes Yamaha uses for model designations has been covered previously, but my best efforts at searching could not find a comprehensive thread or post with the info. (Anyone care to show me up and find it?) (Edit: I mean I DID find wfooshee's most helpful table on the model designations HERE) Regardless, I don't think we have ever really specifically discussed how the different models vary in the VIN and I would like to get all the info in one place for those like me who have nothing better to do with their time. I was just comparing the VINs of my different FJRs today trying to figure out what, if any useful information I could obtain from them.

During my research, I learned some new stuff about the VIN Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS) which are the 4th-8th digits of the VIN. These are the digits that a manufacturer can use for their own purpose to seperate various models/engines ect. While you can find info on the VDS for some auto manufacturers, I could find nothing about Yamaha's use of those digits. Not surprising considering how secretive they are. So, I figure it's up to us to compile what we can about these VDS codes. Why? For no apparent reason whatsoever. ;) That way we'll have a reference for anybody who REALLY wants to know. I'll start with the limited info I have from my personal knowledge of the 2004s. Feel free to add your year's info and I will update this post so all year's info will be in one place. If this info is somewhere else, let me know in a very public and humiliating way!

Format will be:

Model.....Yamaha Model Designation.....VIN VDS

2003 FJR

non-ABS.....FJR13R.....?????

non-ABS (California).....FJR13RC.....?????

2004 FJR

non-ABS.....FJR13S.....RP07E

ABS.....FJR13AS.....RP09E

non-ABS (California).....FJR13SC.....?????

ABS (California).....FJR13ASC.....?????

non-ABS.....FJR13T.....?????

ABS.....FJR13AT.....RP09E

non-ABS (California).....FJR13TC.....?????

ABS (California).....FJR13ATC.....RP09Y

I think that for GenI FJRs, all year VIN VDSs follow: non-abs: RP07E, non-abs Cali: RP07Y, ABS: RP09E, ABS Cali: RP09Y.

But I will wait for verification of that. For GenIIs, I have no idea.

2006 FJR

Standard.....FJR13AV.....?????

Standard (California).....FJR13AVC.....?????

Electric Shift.....FJR13AEV.....?????

Electric Shift (California).....FJR13AEVC.....?????

There's a thread around here someplace where all the AE riders posted their year and VIN numbers. Probably a good place to start for at least the AE's. (I looked but can't find it right now). Started by Brodie?

Tried and true basic VIN decoder. Yamaha VIN decoder with digits 4-8 for the Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS).

FWIW, the VDS code for my '04 is RP09E.

Sample VIN from a salvage bike I looked at a few years ago: JYARP07Y33A000146

It looks like all the Yamaha VDS codes break down into the same format: Motorcycle: FJR1300; Body style: Road / Street; Drive type: RWD; Cylinders: 4 Cylinders

Hey jackass...I posted up a VIN map a couple of years ago. I know Iggy was in on that too, but good luck finding it. Yamaha cannot be "secretive" about the designations of VIN positions. Each position has its own specific meaning. There is country of origin, plant, model, engine, year etc...The ninth number is a check digit only. If I remember right, the last 6 designate the unit number...

Good luck, and if this doesn't work, try masturbating with your other hand.

Yeah right HRZ, SkootyG is so totally uncoordinated he can't walk and chew gum at the same fecking time!

Why the Hell did you think that the poor old Dirty Old Whore went flying through the air as often as she did!

I came to the rescue with a positive click. I liked that post.
Muchas Gracias Mi Compadre, I covered your six also with a rescue; we Vato Locos have to stick together ese! Where is my illegitimate bastard Hijo (Son) SkooterG on his own thread?

HotRodZilla and Papa Chuy have thrown out enough stinky bait, he should have risen to the surface to hit the hook by now! Probably watching his Chicago Cubs. Losers Love Losers!
