Not much info for a 17-month absence! How'd you do the headers? What happened at the rear end? Didja take power off the stock middle gear or turn that over? Can't see all of it, but that don't look like no Supertrapp!

Forget bike muffs. Try a Flowmaster or Supertrapp. Come in any size to suit, will work and sound great.
+1 on the flowmaster

once you're past the header any muffler shop and work with you to get the used stuff out the back quietly. from the photo, you look like you used a bike muff.

Wow was it that long since I posted? I guess I should call home soon too!!

Yep, I used an R1 muffler, since I got it for almost nothing. I'm not sure if it will be too restrictive, but it will do for now.

As for the headers, I ended up fabricating my own out of mandrel bends. I made a mock-up out of plastic pool hose first and then copied it in steel. I soon realised that welding around a circular tube is a lot harder than in a straight line like most of the rest of the car was. It's no oil painting, but only cost me a weekend of pain.

I ended up taking the drive off the bike UJ, through a custom made driveshaft to my rear end. This is flipped upside down and I have a small electric oil pump feeding oil to the pinion bearing in the diff. The pump is situated up by the shock in the picture

Oh - I also have a spare FJR engine here for playing with and have a Mitsubishi TD04 turbocharger from a WRX which I have some grand plans for once I get the car all dialled in.

Wow, you've gotten a lot done. I concur that the R-1 muffler may not pass enough exhaust, but it would make it stret legal for now. Above all, it looks like.....

I think I am gonna slap a old zx12 motor in my kids go kart....

I suppose I may have to update the brakes though....... Hmmm and the Axels, wheels, tires and rack and pinion...

Can't wait for the look on d ole'ladys face when I pull a wheelie wid it!!!

I think the R1 muff will work just fine. We have to remember that the R1 is one liter spinning at a lot more rpm than the FJR's 1.3 liters. You just need to figure the total flow at redline and compare the two.

Good luck and I hope you have no problems getting it street legal.

I have some friends in northern Cali ( near Sac ) that are moving out of state because of all the problems they have had getting their cars legal after restoring them... not running junks, but very nice restorations....

Plymouth Fury's of all things, but hey...

a purple convertible with a white top is cool no matter what! <G>

If my Suzuki Bandit keeps falling over and getting dented many more times, I'd like to put it in an old Mini-Cooper....or something....

You didn't mention what type of Toyota RE. The Miata is independent and adjustable. Just sayin... :dribble:

As a bonus, it's already apart to facilitate a 5 angle valve job plus, the bottom end is disassembled and ready for blue-printing and balancing. The engine is complete, less one head bolt that didn't survive the disassembly process. All you need to do is figure out way to extract the 10 valves that are hammered into the cylinder head. Looking from the combustion chamber side of the head, all the valve heads are offset 0.350 inch toward the intake port side of the head. Pixs should be available next week. This offers the perfect chance to attend to the plane bearings, shot peen the rods and add a thicker head gasket to drop compression for the turbo. I'll throw in a free body bag for the parts :(

 
Ionbeam - I already have a spare motor but thanks for the offer. That request of mine for an engine was from way back - I shouldn't have ressurected such an old posting.

I bought a 2nd motor a while back after having a freak attack! I had been building the car for over a year when I took off the engine sump plug. A ton of water came gushing out, convincing me that for sure I had bought a dud motor. It turned out that during the motorcycle impact, the front tire had crushed the rad and ruptured the oil cooler, mixing the oil and water. At the same time a cheap motor came up on ebay and I bought it, but it doesn't look like the water did any harm.

So I have the spare motor, a Mitsubishi TD04 turbocharger and intercooler from a WRX and the plan is to work on a turbo setup once I have the time. Any advice you guys have on how well the FJR would hold up under boost, what mods to do etc would be great.

I was also thinking that the FJR engine would make an awesome AWD package for a car. Remove the middle drive gear assembly, and replace with a custom drive shaft which runs right through the length of the engine and out through custom machined side covers with bearings and oil seals to a pair of flanges. The engine would be mounted longtitudinally in the car instead of transverse as it is in the bike (and my car). There might even be enough room where the bevel gears were to put a small center differential assembly.....

ThrottlejockeyTJ - it is a 3.42:1 rear end from a Celica. You are corect about the miata except the whole sub-frame assembly is quite heavy for my application and the gear ratio is quite short. Many people are using the miata components in these cars though, they are good and cheap. I might upgrade to a small IRS diff and fabricte the rear a-arms similar to the front in the future, but the live rear end will do for now.
