FJR Vs R1

I have both bikes. I was riding my R1 Friday, followed by a friend on a '05 FJR. I wicked up the R1 and lost the FJR like a bad habit. Sorry to tell you that, but my R1 weighs 393 pounds dry and came stock with 150HP. The FJR is at least 525 pounds and has 145HP. Simple math.

I thought the R1 had more like 185hp? I thought it was closer to the Busa?

Yeah they say 180, but the best I've seen is 152hp stock at the rear wheel, about the same as a Busa. I've heard claims of more on a R1, but never seen it myself. My buddy has a Busa with a pipe, PC, and TRE and the best he's gotten on the dyno is 166 @ wheel at sea level. The older R1's had more low/mid torque, but HP was approx. 130 @ wheel. Suspension, there's no comparison between old and new though. I love my FJR, but if I want pucker pulling adrenaline fun for speed and handling, the R1 wins hands down!

Apples to oranges here. You keep quoting rear wheel and I think all the other numbers here are crank. The fjr crank is 145, rear wheel is in the 120's.

Don't disagree with you at all just trying to match numbers with numbers...

I don't really care if a honda rebel comes up next to me if he can go faster than 120mph then most likely he will beat me...

I disagree. I can do more miles on the bike than I can in any car. I find it exceedingly hard to stand up and stretch while driving the car.

I've done San Diego to Dallas in under 24 hours on the FJR and I can't come close in a car (I fall asleep).

Do cagers look at you oddly when you'e standing up on the FJR? Some refuse to pass, some pass IMMEDIATELY, and some just look at me like I'm from Mars.

I never thought about it until yesterday. I stood up as I often do when I first get on and the car behind that was right up on my as* suddenly backed off and never came near me again. I thought maybe I had something on my butt :lol:

I've seen published hp figures in the 154 to 158 range for the R1. But Yamaha says with the forced induction it gains horsepower, up to 180, as the speed increases. Anybody else heard this?

Prolly 90% or more who buy these for the street will never ride as well as the bike is capable of being ridden, and many of them wouldn't care to push the limits that far on the street anyway.

Yep, that describes me to a tee...my reflexes aren't nearly as good as they used to be! (But I still enjoy riding the FJR immensely.)

Yeah the manual/Yamaha states 180hp @crank. 180 for the R1 is optimistic! All Dyno's read different though. Only as good as the operator/weather conditions. Let's just say it has more than enough for an average rider! lol

Given the right road (or lack there-of), your DRZ will beat an R1. :haha:

That's not an M1, it's an M-60 with reactive armor - less horsepower to the treads, slower 1/4 mile times than the M1.

M60 couldn't do 45 with a hurricane on it's ass, especially with the Reac armor (which we didn't have yet) adding yet more weight to an already heavy tank. We could get 35, maybe 40 out of a gov disabled fresh motored 60, 'specially if we was skeered...

As a kid we had yz250's and such and loved to street race then (1980's) sport bikes. Off the line and up to about 3rd gear our yz's took most street bikes.

Who cares about HP? The R1 has a 5 valve head and is tuned for higher engine speed. Likewise the HP rating will be higher. Also, peak ratings don't mean squat, its the curves that need be compared.

Compare torque numbers and their curves - that's how you compare engines!!

That being typed, the R1 will still smoke the FJR in every performance category except long haulin. 40% less weight (bike only) = simple physics. Not to mention it is a sport bike and is set up as such.

Torque, lots of it, and in a nice, wide, useable band is the key to enjoyable street riding. All the horsepressures in the world don't work well if they're all at the the top of the band, and can only be accessed with WFO throttle. This, to me, is one of the reasons the Feej works so well.

Some days it's R1, some days it's the FJR that's the most fun! Granted, the FJR's thrust (torque) from 2500 rpm in 5th gear far exceeds that of the R1 at that rpm in 6th, but you wouldn't be in 6th gear @ 2500 rpm anyways. Not made for that. Torque on the R1 is approx. 70lbs. max stock. Usually I ride in 4th when 45 mph or less on the R1. At that rpm plenty of oomph! Now on the track, the R1 is all business! From 7500 to 13000, you better be on your game! The FJR is designed for road use with some occasional spirited backroad riding, where the R1 was designed for racing. If I want a more relaxed cruise, I take the FJR. If I want an adrenaline rush, it's the R1! Ever ridden one? Experience it for yourself! If your not experienced with sportbikes it will scare the shit out of you, so be gentle with it at first! Coming from Sportbikes to a Sport tourer, I had to detune myself some. Torque is good, but the combo of both is unbeatable! FJR definately has it in the comfort dept. though and that's why I bought it, well that due to me not gettin any younger and Brenda moaning every time she gets off of the R1 (not always a bad thing)! lol Have to say though, she's a lot happier on the FJR which in turn makes me a happy man! lol
