FJR1300 Air Wings (deflectors)

I talked with Dale over at Baker Built Air Wings and he thinks he can make some side air wings for the GEN 2 but wasn't sure about what your top side farings looks like. Something about perhaps there being a moving part in the way.

Can one of you GEN2 guys post a pic of the top of your side fairing where this air wing would mount up? I can call Baker Built for you and get the info as well as pass on pics if you want them to include and

perhaps fabricate a model for the GEN2 FJRs?

In the meantime, I have been so happy with the look and function of my air wings, I am going to go ahead and get the hand wings to take advantage of them as well. (They make these Hand Wings for both for the GEN1 and Gen2 FJRs) I should then be riding cooler in the summer, dryer in the rain and dressed for the party. A good addition I think.

The picture in Post #4 from the Baker Air Wing site, is a Gen II bike with the wings installed. Why would they need another picture? This has clearly been done.

as for the "grommets" I used around the brackets .. Good eye in catching that.. I actually used black weather stripping from your local hardware store. I simply cut them thin and lean, and with the tape adhesive the stripping comes with I looped it around hole I made for the mounting and for good measure used my heat gun briefly to mold around the posts. It seemed to work good and finished off a clean looking mount.

TomInCA - If that pic of the burgundy FJR in post #4 that has the side lower air wings and hand wings mounted on it is a GEN2, then I guess it will work just fine for both generation bikes.

Anyone know why they don't have any that fit Gen II's ?

The fairing piece shown in the photo of the Gen 2 is held with two screws and two clips. There is layer of fairing beneath it, so no room. Not to mention the danger of blowing these pieces off at higher speeds (as has been posted a couple of times).

That said, if you were sure you didn't want to move the fairing pieces out, you could mount them permanently, is my guess, but you'd have to find some hardware to make it work. One also might be able to make a U-shaped bracket that would curl under the inside edge of the movable fairing piece and mount it to the solid layer underneath it.... would take some research. There is very little room between these panels, so may have to go below the solid piece?

squeezer, I like the idea of a mirror bracket mount for the Hand Wings..... I may just move mine up there.

OK gang, after installing the baker air wings, I really liked them and what they offered, so I went ahead and purchased the matching hand air wings that can be used to either block the wind and elements off your hands and torso area, or be turned to let some nice breeze in. That said, with it warming up here in Virginia, I installed the Baker hand wings this weekend and I am very pleased with the look and function. I changed up the install again, just as I did the side air wings. instead of having the mount bracket go across my fairing, I used my Dremmel again and cut small notched holes for the brackets and mounted them under the faring for a cleaner look. A bit more work, but I like the results better. Took me about 40mins for the whole thing. Now I am all dressed up with the baker made air wings for both my legs, chest and hands. This should make for a bit more of a comfortable ride.

Take a look and see what you guys think. My wife says it looks like my bike now has sunglasses as it's cool

I would think that if you adjusted them to "catch air" and deflect it onto your legs, there would be a hell of a lot of force trying to rip them off your bike. They would also act like brakes, slowing your bike down and eating into your MPG.

ran them on my 83 GL1100 and 84 GL1200 without any problems. they were both helle-hotter than the FJR simply because the fairing was so much larger and the dead air space was bigger in the summer. they work very well. be sure to periodically check the tightness of the attachment/swivel connectors as they tend to get loose over time. nice to see they're not here for the FJR.

Well way back when Baker had not come out with a set of wings for the FJR so I made my own mount and bought there Honda Goldwing units. 39k later I am still in love keeps me cooler and warmer when needed!!!

I ride all years and on of the things I contend with is the elements. Rain, wind, heat, etc..

So recently I add some deflectors on the side of the faring from Air Wings.

I have riden a few weeks with them on and I have to say I am happy. I can adjust them to keep the rain and wind off my legs and when it gets warm I can turn them to deflect the wing to blow and cool on my legs. I have to say these work well.

I mounted them a bit different then the manufacture instructs as I didn't like the idea of the mount bar across my side fairing so I made small slots with my dermal and mounted the wings under the side faring. I think it gives it a cleaner look. See what you guys think:

I like the look of the way you mounted the wings. Are those grommets you used where the bracket enters the fairing? If so, where did you get them?

For the mesh around my fairing vent openings... I simply used some stainless steel mesh you find at auto parts place like pep boys. This is the same mesh tuners put in the grills of their cars to dress them up. I cut he mesh to my fairing vents, moulded them in and then I epoxied in the mesh on the inside of my fairing. You could use liquid nails as well and just let it set.

Very simple to do and I like the look it makes.

I'm glad you resurrected this old thread. I'd forgotten that I was looking at these wings once before. Now with summer coming (it gets here a little early in Florida) I decided it's time to pull the trigger. So I ordered both the hand wings and the regular wings in Blue to match my 05. It's going to be a busy weekend next week when I mount up my wings and my AVCC and my L.E.D. tail lights. Might as well tackle it all at once. Thanks for the post and the little "reminder."

Looking at your mounting location, I noticed you placed them just a couple inches above the "V" shaped corner of the fairing. I assume you chose this exact location for a reason? I forget now, but I'm thinking you said something about a template that came from the factory. By the way, as you probably know, your pictures from post #23 (back on April 24 last year) seem to have disappeared. I'm guessing they were of your hand wings?? Spoze you could repost them? I'd be interested in seeing how you mounted them.

I finally finished installing my wings. Had an issue, called Baker - they were real good about it and sent me out a replacement set. They explained that the blue ones are acrylic and sometimes come ot of the press a little warped. Great customer service!

To begin, for some reason the "spring nuts" as Yammie calls them, were missing on my FJR, here i"m getting ready to slip it in place...

Now I've got some threads into which I can drive a screw...

So here they are, the hand wings. Notice the two rubber grommets to protect the paint...

All supplied hardware is stainless or aluminum and guaranteed not to corrode...

Each hand wing has a snap lock cap to cover the supplied screw...

Camera angle is deceptive, they are perfectly verticle. Here they are fully closed to block air flow. Notice the rotation limiter plate attached to the hinge pin? It's about 3/4 of an inch wide. It stops the wing from turning any farther when it's in the full opn position. Good thing cause up around triple digits, the wind could really snap it open if not for the built in stop: really nice design...

Fully open to catch max air; camera lookng straight up...

Here the cap for the screw is in place, wing is set straight - it has little or no effect on the wind in this position...

Above the bottom wing wing is open, the top wing is in closed position.

THE LOWER WINGS-on a Gen 1, wow, WHAT a difference: much cooler when it's hot out (just about 90 last week) -- and keeps the cold air OFF the knees when the weather turns cold.

THE HAND WINGS-they do indeed block some of the wind when fully closed, but where they really make the difference is when they're set in the open position. They cool the tank as well as my stomach and chest. THE RANGE OF ADJUSTMENT WORKS QUITE WELL. HUGE DIFFERENCE WHEN IT'S HOT OUT

Nice looking install. Looks like you mounted your lower wings a few inches higher than mine. It's hard to see from the angle you shot. That would get a little more air above the knee ?? Also, do they get in the way of those forward mounted foot pegs? HMMMM... is that why the wings are mounted a little higher ?

Yes they do. Here's the link: CLICKY Click on the little window on the left right below where it says "New Generation Hand Wings." Then choose Gen 2, and the select the color you want, clear, or light or dark tint.

Ya don't need anything else. Ya just order the kit. Everything's included. I'd recommend the handwings over the lower wings for a Gen 2... as you don't have near the heat problem below your knees that Gen 1 bikes have. Besides, they're cheaper.

Thanks! My mounting location was primarily dictated by the Heat Troller controls already mounted there. There is also a foam spacer just below the lower control. Not sure if moving up or down would change the air flow much, but definitely clear the foot pegs up front.
