What: 2022 FJR1300 Eastern Owners Meet (EOM)

The venue and staff in Flatwoods was just too good to pass up a round 2. It has been a while since I've had such a positive experience with interactions with a venue staff and management. It takes what can be a very stressful behind the scenes time and turns it into a completely enjoyable experience from start to finish. There were enough enjoyable roads in the general area to support a return as well. We are hoping the state of things allows for the on-site restaurant to be at full service and capacity this September, but only time will tell. I will be working on the website and social media updates this week. There will be an event on facebook, as well as advertised on the FJRIders.com Facebook group.

Am I asleep at the wheel? Have I gone blind? Am I just stupid? Did I miss the secret code word, or handshake? And don't be narrow minded, it could be any combination or all of those.
Are the GPS map downloads for EOM 2022 available yet? I've looked everywhere I know to look and clicked every link I can find to click but haven't found download files yet.
Would someone please point me in the right direction? Maybe a link?

Thanks,
dan

Thank you, I wasn't sure if it was just me!!
I wasn't going to bother you directly over the holiday weekend since it's family time for lots of folks. I am planning to leave home next Saturday, so that will be my last-minute project.

  1. St Marys - 201 miles

  2. Spencer - 216 miles

  3. Snowshoe - 218 miles

  4. Short Route - 85 miles

  5. Parsons - 257 miles

  6. New River Gorge - 177 miles

I am trying to understand why there are 6 different routes posted for 6 different events; and yet there exists only one linked file available for ALL of these different routes with different events... What exactly am I missing?

Great Question - I'll try to explain.

The single zip file that can be downloaded from the EOM website (here) contains a single compressed GPX file. A GPX file is the commonly used map / route format by Garmin GPS products (Garmin Zumo, etc). That single GPX file contains the 6 routes that were created for the EOM event based out of Flatwoods, WV. There is short description of each route with mileage summary and google maps image here for EOM attendees to preview them. These are not separate events, but provided as suggested day ride loops based out of the Days Inn in Flatwoods, WV (EOM HQ for 2022). These are route files are provided as suggestions for day rides based on information from local members and those of the group who have riden the area.

If a rider / guest at EOM doesn't have a GPS to load these routes into, there are options; there are GPX viewer apps for smartphones that will allow you to view or even navigate the route using your smartphone. There are opportunities to socialize with others at the event and find someone who does have a GPS and follow them on one of the routes. Or, you can even just 'wing it' and go explore.

Traditionally, EOM is a riding event - the focus of the event is to host it in an area that offers riding options for most - whether you're in the 2-up, smell the roses & scenery group or the tire melting, apex seeking crowd. Route / loop distance varies for that reason as well - something for most (because something for everyone would be nearly impossible). Shorter loops are nice if there's bad weather in the area or coming, longer loops are nice for those who seek out the challenge. One year, we had a "EOM500" loop - 500 miles of technical, twisty, & challenges rounds in NC and TN. A few attempted it, legend has it someone finished it.

Hope this helps - let me know if you have any other questions - here or via pm.

Okay, color me curious, or color me dense, or both.
What is the Spkbuk Special route all about?
Is that route paved roads all the way through?
Or is that route something special for the ADV crowd?
I can't get GoogleMaps to duplicate that route.

Dan,

Jim - Spklbuk on this forum as well as the other FJR community board and ADVrider is a local WV native and provided that route as an addition to the route package from last year. EOM was in Flatwoods last year (2021). Jim provided an indepth review of the that route over on the other forum and stated it is FJR friendly - no gravel, but some single lane paved portions.

EOM has also been posted in Lewisburg, WV; the routes from those events were exceptional, and Jim had much to do with that, even though he may never openly admit to it. I've followed Jim on numerous occasions, both on road and off, and each time it's a noteworthy experience.

The fact that GoogleMaps won't duplicate the route would be the first indicator that it's worth exploring.

One thing is for sure, unless your planning to spend a week in Flatwoods, selecting which loops to ride while you're there will be a difficult decision - there are no bad choices, only choices.

I hope this helps some, and enjoy!

I think that helps make one of my choices!! Thanks.

I asked because GoogleMaps usually won't route on dirt / gravel roads.
