I have 20000 miles on my 09 .It will not start but turns over normaly.when I turn the key on ,I don't hear the fuel pump buzz you should get with the key in the on position.Is four years or 20000 miles about it for a fuel pump,and is it a major fix?Any one

 
In all the posts / problems I have read about, I don't recall the fuel pump being one. If it were, it wouldn't be a difficult job. It just bolts into the bottom of the tank.

We need more info. When was the last time you started it, and what did you do?? It's possibly the fuel pump, but not likely. It may just be flooded and in need of a couple good WOT cranks.

However, this is just a wild assed guess without knowing more.

Fuel pumps don't go bad on the FJR.. Sounds like you experiencing the weird FJR spinning starter syndrome. Try WOT while cranking a couple of times.

 
The last time I didn't get the fuel pump noise when I turned the key, I had used the kill switch to shut it down when I last parked it in the garage...and then forgot to turn the kill switch back off...

got it to start ,this morning but not till I thumped the lower right hand side of the tank ,then I could hear the pump start.We have had week or so of drizzly ran my MC garage collects a lot of moisture, may have something to do with it .I did wash it before I parked it,who knows ,maybe ok,and by the way the first thing checked was the kill switch ,I've done that before,now I fear being stranded!

 
Notice how the first thing the plumber goes after is a plumbing system? Now, if he were an electrician he would go right after the electrical system

However, if he were a Geek or NERD he would go to the diAG and use the actuator code to turn on the pump relay and troubleshoot the problem.

When all you have is a hammer, the whole world looks like a nail.

 
It's not fixed by any means but the relay makes sense, just don't have any way to check it .I have a multi meter but no lisense to operate it ! I'll just thump it for know

Click the link in my previous post, then use the built-in diagnostic capabilities of your FJR and test the relay and pump using the Gen II actuator code 50. The instructions are in the thread the link sends you to.

The odds of your problem being the pump itself approach zero. There are much higher odds that the electrical connector to the pump was not clicked together securely or the wires got pinched. Yamaha has had some reliability issues with high current relays. While the relay can't be ruled out it isn't very likely on such a young motorcycle.

Burt, you have a wonderful resource of people on here who would probably walk you through the trouble shooting process. I would, but I've never done it so I wouldn't be the best. However, there are those that have and I'm sure they'll be along to guide you.

Just out of curiosity, when is the last time you pulled the tank up? Maybe it's as simple as a loose connection.

Mr. Howie, there is a difference between normal mortality for parts and blatant murder by means of massive ferrous oxide poisoning. Your fuel pump died an unnatural death unrelated to reliability.

(Your engine died a natural death due to the unusually high mortality of OEM CCT.)

Say, have you noticed your FJR on the whole has had an abnormal amount of seriously failed systems... You are almost 8 on the 'Carver scale of 10. I figure my FJR rings up a 6.

You are being WAAAAAY to specific in regards to Skoot's generalize statement...

You ARE 100% correct...but SkooterG said "fuel pumps don't go bad on FJRs". Regardless of cause, either unreliability, or having 2 pounds of rust shoved down their throats, fuel pumps CAN and DO go bad on FJRs.

However, on your last question, the ONLY other problem I've had on my '04 is/was a signal fuse problem I traced down to a bad horn (short). So in regards to "seriously failed systems", I'd have to say mine rates no higher than yours...no WAY near the "Carver Benchmark". :D

Just a quick addition to Ionbeam's procedure - when you cycle through the Diagnostic codes and get to 'code 50', you will need to 'toggle' the kill switch to get the fuel pump relay to activate. Toggle means switch off and then on again. Hope that helps a little.

 
Have you checked the condition of the FI fuse and its mounts on top of the starter relay. In the UK this area corrodes badly and can cause issues with the fuel pump not running. If your pump itself is causing issues (I've had one fail) I came across a US seller on ebay selling new pattern pumps for $44.96 (felcoproducts) its much cheaper than either new Yamaha items or even secondhand genuine Yamaha.
