Well here it was. The trip I had been waiting for much longer than most of you. ;) After putting several grand into the bike over the winter, my FJR is ready to tour the country. After knocking out my new longest day going to and from SFO, I knew I could go farther with my very comfortable Russell seat. But how far was the question. I didn't want to kill myself on the first day so I added about another hundred miles to my SFO mark and pegged Santa Rosa, NM as my first stop on Saturday, July 19th. This would set me up for an easy Sunday too in case I was tired.

Yeah, I couldn't have been more wrong!! I left FTW at 6 am, stopped for gas once in Vernon, TX and was in Amarillo by 11:15 am. Nice! I tried to get some Subway at a truck stop but they had no seating. And McDonald's wasn't gonna let you eat Subway in there part of the place either. So screw them! :p I topped off and headed out. Next was Tucumcari and my first time in New Mexico! It was very pretty, very green which I wasn't expecting. I thought it would look more like Reno but it wasn't even close. 75 mph in New Mexico had me in Santa Rosa by 2 pm! Damn, forgot about the time change too! I could've knocked out another tank of gas before calling it a day. I felt like a huge tard checking into my room that early. But the Best Western in Santa Rosa is nationally ranked for cleanliness so I called it a day. Went and got Subway and then took a nap. Went back out later on and hit the hot spots in this Route 66 town.

The next morning I was on the road by 9 am and headed for Taos. This was the most exciting day I had planned and I was really amped to see some mountains!

Although it started out a little flat here on Hwy 84 (I almost ran over a snake on this road!):

img0661an3.jpg

The scenery got prettier after I passed Las Vegas and got onto 518.

img0695bj9.jpg

img0696pk1.jpg

Things got twisty as I went through the mountains and mesas on 518 and I wasn't able to shoot anymore pics because I hadn't figured out yet that I could loop my camera cord on the zipper of my jacket. Um, yeah. So I missed some good stuff on this day. As I arrived in Taos at about 12:40, traffic stopped as a bunch of firetrucks were hogging the road and backing up into what I assumed was the fire station. But it turns out that they were backing onto a side street so they could lead a parade that was about to begin. I made it through just in time and felt like I was on parade myself. We were moving so slowly that I couldn't take my hand off the clutch to get any pics but the whole town was lined up on the main street to watch. And it was about 95 degrees! I was getting pretty toasted. I finally got out of there and onto 64, which was wide freakin open.

img0702we3.jpg

I'm flying along and all of a sudden there's a parking lot and a bridge. ok. why? what's with the parking lot full of bikes and cars and people? Once I got onto the bridge I found out.

The Rio Grande Gorge Bridge:

I later heard at NAFO, that the lack of signage for this little wonder was because it's Indian land. I guess they are against metal signs. :p I continued on 64 and then it hooked up with 84 and took me into CO. The scenery was beginning to change.

img0757lw1.jpg

I was heading into the San Juan Mountains and nearing my destination of Pagosa Springs, CO. I thoroughly enjoyed riding by myself and seeing new places from the seat of my bike. I was excited to hit the hot springs across from my hotel. This resort has 20 natural pools and a river for tubing too.

img0788yd3.jpg

I got settled into my room, had some food in the bar and was about to go change when I turned around in my chair and noticed the dark menacing clouds outside. I got the bike cover on just in time but loungin the pools wasn't going to happen. So I went back to the bar and enjoyed alcohol for the first time in about 2 weeks and watched the ESPY's. Justin Timberlake was very very funny!! :D

(more to come)

Monday has me headed to meet Duff in Salida for lunch. So I head out of Pagosa on 160 through Wolf Creek Pass to South Fork. This was a very, very pretty area!

img0799er4.jpg

I saw a bambi and momma jump out across the road and scare the crap out of the car ahead of me. It was early and not much traffic. There was a lot of water running down onto the rocks.

img0806ig8.jpg

By now I have my camera looped onto my jacket zipper and I'm taking pics like I'm possessed. I ended up with over 515 total for the trip. Don't worry, I didn't even put one third of them on my website and I'll only hit the highlights on here.

I continued on to the flat area of 112, to 285 to Poncha Springs. The GPS (I call her Geeps) said this trip would take 3.5 hours. I arrived in 2.5. Geeps was a little off on this one. Coulda slept longer. This was cool in Poncha Springs:

img0846ah6.jpg

I then found Duff in Salida and we had some pizza. Headed out to our next stop, The Royale Gorge. Yes, I just can't get enough of the gorges. This one was really cool, well actually hotter than I cared for, but the bridge was smaller than we were expecting. First we rode the tram over, not scary at all, darn it. We saw a dude propose to his girl in the observation tower. Cute kids. Then we walked back over the bridge. Pretty strong wind there in the middle. Here's some highlights:

img0870im0.jpg

Once we were back on the side we started on, we decided to do the Incline Railroad car. This was pretty cool. Except for the kid that threw up on the way down. :bad: He was 3 rows above us but we stayed dry.

img0875vg2.jpg

Going down wasn't that exciting because we couldn't see much. Your pretty locked into this thing and clearly the best view is in the front row. We're gonna hope for that on the way up. And also a puke-free ride!

Going down:

img0894do3.jpg

Yes, by some stroke of luck, we did score the front of the car on the way back up! We were so excited. Until we saw the little puke monster in line right behind us! Grandma assured us he was feeling better now and had an empty stomach anyways. <_< Yeah, ok. So up we go.

img0903gv2.jpg

Its gotta be 100 degrees by now and we are both in riding gear. :( The only thing left to do was hop on the bikes and ride across the bridge. So we knocked that out and headed to Duff's sister's place in Colorado Springs. This would be home until it was time to hit Golden on Wednesday.

img0905jo4.jpg

Sweet pics Chik!! I'll have to swing through there someday.

Tuesday has us doing a day ride to Deckers and Cripple Creek with Duff's brother in law. Very fun stuff. It was fairly twisty on the way to Deckers, Hwy 67. I didn't get any pics until we stopped at the local biker hangout, which of course was empty except for one gentleman who knows our own DaveT. That's his Valkyrie in the pic behind the hummingbird.

img0924cu2.jpg

We saw the clouds bunching up and looking dark awfully early so we decided to nix lunch in Woodland Park in order to knock out Cripple Creek. That was also some awesome stuff. We were about halfway up when about 6 mountain sheep or goats decided to jump the road and almost take out the Prius in front of our group. Duff got some pics of them but I was busy praying they would stand still as I went between several of them. It started raining shortly after that and the rest of our ride was wet and cold. So no more pics unfortunately. Great roads though! Cripple Creek is like Deadwood only newer.

Wednesday Duff and I took a small break from the bike and rode the Cog Train up Pike's Peak. We rode out to Manitou Springs, got our passes and had an hour to kill. So we ran through Garden of the Gods quick. I'm guessing most of you have already seen this, so I'll keep it brief.

img0933xu1.jpg

img0937xz2.jpg

img0941xb5.jpg

Closer shot of the climbers:

img0942tn1.jpg

And then we headed back to the Cog Train. It was a very informative ride and Duff stumped the young lady who did the narrative on how many cogs there were on the entire track. He did figure it out on the way down!

img0949wv0.jpg

img0959rk7.jpg

We're getting up there but we are on the wrong side of the train for the best views.

img0965uo9.jpg

25% grade. Only a cog train can do it.

img0969zo1.jpg

Above the treeline now.

img0970xh0.jpg

Herd of elk just hanging out. Saw them on the way up and down. Duff prolly has better pics of these guys.

img0975bx8.jpg

The only thing we could see of the road was one of the last curve toward the top.

img0984sw9.jpg

At the top, about to get out of the train, here comes the rain again.

img0987yl6.jpg

img0989xy2.jpg

Awwww!

img0995ps4.jpg

Anyone for some lane splitting?

img0998up9.jpg

img0997ch1.jpg

img1002nw6.jpg

Then it was back down the mountain and out into the rain for the wonderfully wet and dirty ride to Golden. I made a newbie error and opted just for the rain liner in my jacket. Wrong, chik, wrong. Go with the rain suit you spent good bucks on. I failed to factor in road spray, which turned the light rain showers into the messiest crap I've ever road through. And I was pretty damn cold by the time we got out of it in Denver. Geeps also failed Duff and I here as it told us that 470 was a toll road, which we weren't interested in. So we went on past and took 6 out to Golden. No biggie I was drying out and warming up by then anyways.

We arrived at the hotel to find only a few peeps here:

img1006bx4.jpg

We stuffed some registration packets and had some drinks and dinner. I was so exhausted from the ride in and not getting enough sleep in COS, I was really ready for the plush comfy bed that reminded me of mine at home. Mattress toppers are a true gift from God!! Good night y'all!

Thursday's highlight after sitting in registration all day was the NasKart competition!! I couldn't wait to see this place. But first I need to apologize for having everyone follow Fairlaner in his car. I forgot how this man drives. I'm really very sorry for those of you that got left behind in the lobby area, I thought you guys would see all of us rolling past and jump on at the end. And while I enjoyed the Warchild sandwich in the back seat, another "I'm Sorry" to those you who lost track of Fairlaner on the freeway and went on past the track. I'm glad you guys were able to turn around and find it fairly quickly. So now we are at the track. And man were we impressed! When we arrived there was one kart out there just haulin ***. I seriously was very concerned for what I had signed these nice motorcyclists up for. One wrong move and there's gonna be broken bones at that speed!!

.5 mile track with a Deadman's curve way at the back.

img1010gh5.jpg

But it turned out that our guys were going to be in the much slower karts, thank god. So the group gets the once over the rules from "The man who could be bought".

img1009oz1.jpg

Then heat number 1 heads out.

img1016sg6.jpg

Then heat number 2 gets ready to go.

img1020zc8.jpg

Final race:

img1024nc2.jpg

I guess there wasn't too much surprise as to who won:

Just doin my job.

We all headed back to the hotel and SkooterG caught up to us at the last stoplight. He had his broken, twisted-around PHID turned on, which at that time of night, created his own spotlight on himself. It was pretty hilarious!

Friday turned out to be another non-riding day for me, which was disappointing. In hindsight, I should have taken off when I got up around 10 instead of hanging around. Oh well. One of Friday's highlights was drinks with ShinyPartsUp. We had a great conversation and I really enjoyed it. The other Friday highlight:

img1035mk2.jpg

No, no wait...that's not it. Here we go! FJRChick and FJRChik. We felt famous with all the pics being taken of us! :chickawow:

img1037ap1.jpg

And that was the end of Friday. I'll get Saturday's ride to RMNP covered tomorrow cause I need some sleep before FJRChick gets to my place tomorrow.

Great pics and descriptions. I love that part of the country.

75 mph in New Mexico had me in Santa Rosa by 2 pm! Damn, forgot about the time change too! I could've knocked out another tank of gas before calling it a day. I felt like a huge tard checking into my room that early
BTDT. After it happened enough times (twice) I quit making reservations along the way to my destination. I can then stop whenever I feel like it instead of being locked into certain locations. Occasionally it gets challenging to find a room at 11pm in a small town but, overall, it makes the trips much more fluid and enjoyable.

That was a very enjoyable ride report. It looks like you guys had so much fun and saw alot. The go-carts look like a scream! :yahoo:

Thanks for sharing....

Nice ride you had it looks like! :yahoo: Well done. It was a pleasure meeting you and thanks for the "opportunity to win some tires" at the "Saturday night special" Let me know the next time you're in my area, I'll show where the "locals" ride and we'll get some good food too! Ride safe. :clapping:
