Hey Rich,

I'm in NJ as well... just wondering which dealer wouldn't order you the switch prior to you presenting the letter. I just got my letter yesterday. I've added MC Cruise's electronic cruise control to the bike, as well as a Garmin Zumo550, both wired directly to the battery with built-in in-line fuses. I hope this won't raise any eyebrows at the dealership relative to the recall. I've been thinking about adding a Centech AP-1 or AP-2 to make for cleaner, safer electrical connections. Does anyone on here have any experience with Centechs on the FJR?

Thanks everyone!

- Mike

that was the previous guy's post. My dealer had no problems ordering it without the letter.

oh, but i'm using FW Speer in Passaic. NJ's old yamaha dealer and have dealt with them in the past. Good outfit.

Has anyone gotten an "official" recall notice from Yamaha yet???

You really shouldn't have to wait if you bought it new from a Yamaha Dealership. There is a whole paragraph on page one of the Tech Bulletin telling the dealers to contact the owners they have sold too, plus there is a list of affected motorcycles invoiced to their dealership that was included with the bulletin. A dealership worth your biz would be smart to follow the instructions and give their customers a call. We have also told the first 3 we have scheduled that if they want to upgrade with HeliBars Tour Performance top clamp the install is free no matter where they buy the clamp. Yeah I know, ya have to take it off anyway but it's a great way to maybe have a happier customer down the road. I know it sure made some folks happy back when the Roadstars were getting the tranny redone. We installed many sets of High Compression pistons for free on that recall. Made no difference where the customer bought the piston kit, we just installed it for them.
Brad:

In your estimation, what percentage of dealerships do you think are calling people who purchased a FJR from them and informing them of this recall? IMHO, I think it is very few who do so. They won't bother to take the time. I never received a call from the dealership were I bought the bike for the ECU replacement or for this recall. It came directly from Yamaha.

Kudos to your dealership for doing so and offering other stuff to go along with it.

Many dealerships have no idea who bought what without doing a manual search of their files. A dealer would likely call only if you had a personal relationship and he twigged to the fact when the notice arrived.

However the notification package included the names and numbers of the owners of the affected machines they sold. but Yamaha does have to notify everyone directly and the dealer might have hundreds (if not thousands) of bikes to notify about various issues.

In any case, 18 pages on the subject of 'they recalled my bike' is horribly redundant, especially when it affects anyone with a Gen-II who has a machine manufactured before some point in what? December? After all it isn't a question of 'was mine included?'. Of course it was.

There's a similar thread on the Micapeak mailing list comprising of a number of owners writing "I got mine" or "I didn't get mine" (yet).

What a waste of bandwidth - the main power controls were poorly designed and the switch overheats. If there is tension on the wire it will pull out.

I would have thought they'd install a relay that is controlled by the switch, given the current that the thing has to carry. Let's see what the change comprises and whether it survives long-term.

Well I just picked up my bike and guess what? THERE ARE TWO NEW ******* KEYS FOR THE IGNITION! So now I have one key for the ignition and one key for the seat, panniers, top case and helmet locks. ****. :angry22: I though they were going to keep the same key for everything?
Helmet locks? You riding an FJR?

Our ignition switches are different to yours.
Do the US models have immobilisers fitted?

If not then that may explain why the Aussie & Canadian are different, they do.
Aussie logic;

Why would the Aussie switch be different than the Canadian one?

Canadian bikes have the same immobiliser that Aussie bikes do. Canadian bikes have been recalled. You're saying that Aussie bikes have not been (and what of the rest of the world?) Maybe the Aussie government doesn't think you guys are worth saving.

+1 the pathetic excuse for a dealer i bought the bike through when i first came to the US has never sent me anything useful like the ECU recall, the ignition switch or anything, only occasional junk mail.I really don't know how some of these outfits manage to obtain and keep their license from the bike manufacturers. Oh yeah and this is after playing dumb while trying to get me to accept delivery of a band new bike with a deep 5"+ gouge down the side of one of the side cases and scratches on the tank - pathetic is the only way i can describe it.
Dealers don't send recall notices. Manufacturers do. That is why it is important to register your USED bike with Yamaha and to notify them if you change addresses.

Exactly.

Got mine today also.Service manager says I need to "bring it in" before they'll order the part (the letter that is).
I didn't think to put this in the tech. bulletin I linked at the top of the thread again because I wouldn't have imagined a dealer might do that since it's obviously such a safety issue. It says, "You do not need the letter the customer's letter to perform the modification or to file for reimbursement." If they disagree...tell them to read page 9, 4th sentence to you.

That's not entirely true either. According to tech bulletin corporate procedure dealers must notify customers that are unregistered on the report corporate provides to dealers. (Detailed in the Tech. Bulletin synopsis) That does, however, seem to emphasize with the dealer the point bikes need to be registered.

got the recall notice friday, called my local dealer saturday to advise about getting parts AND a heads up that to note that the old lock cylinder stays with the bike to avoid the two key issue. i'll report how it goes.

Had mine done yesterday at LA Yamaha in Marina Del Rey. No issues that I am aware of. They changed the tumbler so I am on the same key and they were aware of this requirement. They indicated they had already done around 5 of these, had several replacement "kits" on hand and did mine in about 2 hrs.

Link

I ordered the one with 2 powerletts on the left side and the helmet lock and just the helmet lock on the right. Works great.

THANKS TO THIS FORUM, I WAS ABLE TO CONVINCE MY YAMAHA SERVICE MANAGER TO CALL HIS REP ABOUT THE RECALL WHILE MY 06 WAS IN THE SHOP FOR THE ALTITUDE RECALL... I GOT A NEW SWITCH AND THEY MADE THE SWITCH WORK WITH MY STOCK KEY. WHEN I GOT THE BIKE HOME, THE RECALL FROM YAMY WAS IN THE MAIL .

THANKS>>>>

DEALER WAS COYOTE MOTOR SPORTS IN DENVER,CO..

Just a thought...

For all of you that had to get a new ignition switch prior to this recall and now are stuck with two keys, this is your golden opportunity to get that fixed.

When the lock cylinder is being swapped, it's not a big deal to re configure the tumblers to match the original key. Both lock cylinders will be in the hands of the service man and he will have 2 sets of tumblers with which to pick and choose to match your key.

Seems to me to be a no-brainer.

Dang it Brodie, there you go THINKING again!

What did Yamaha change in the design? What's different about the new switch that will be installed in the recall? Is that information known yet?

Dropped mine off Saturday, the service manager called me Saturday morning and said he had new switches on order and told me they would be in sometime during the week.

My dealership, Turn 1 in Plymouth IN called me about the recall on Mon 2/2, said he had ordered the switch, and then on Fri 2/6 I got the official letter from Yam. I will ride in there (42 miles) when I have the 600 mile check-up done, probably in April/May.
