Someone asked about the heat and full-coverage gear. There was an article published somewhere that explained how you need to prevent too much airflow once you get above a certain air temp, because it will actually heat you like a convection oven and draw more water from your body. It was an interesting read.
Possibly post #1621 at the top of this page?

Been there, done that... you're in good company... ;)

Chris, welcome aboard. Congrats on the 3 digit number and the finish. Another bright side is that you avoided mention in the daily reports until the very end! Perhaps the next bike will have ABS?

By the way, I was the fool who completed the IBR on my 2006 HD Sportster.

It was great to meet you in Kennesaw. I didn't want to ask why your jacket had holes in the sleeves!

In case you didn't go back thru this entire thread, here's the short clip I took of you departing the lot.

Congratulations on the finish!

It was great to see you at the finish Tony. Maybe not quite the rally you had in mind at the beginning, but real glad you had fun doing it.

And now you have finished 2 IBRs. Dang bud, that's pretty cool.

Once you have recovered enough to face a kybrd, I would be interested (& hopefully others) in your comments about the gear you wore.

What worked well, what was an epic fail? Did anyones 'waterproof' gloves prove that claim?

Thank you and much respect for your efforts. All back safe - no better outcome than that.

From looking at the pics it seems like the KLIM jackets are very popular. Are they worth the big $$$? I saw a lot of long sleeve shirts and jackets in the start and stage 1 Albuquerque pics and would be curious if they rode in the heat with all of that on. Short of the on board AC unit what worked well in the high heat. I can hardly make the 20 mile commute home in the 98 degree heat and 95% humidity with a Joe Rocket Mesh jacket and full face helmet!

A mesh jacket would have you dehydrated much sooner.
+1. This completely changed my game plan and saved my Sturgis trip a few years ago. A must read for anyone new to LD riding.

Ha... Ha...How do you think the riders feel? For 11 days we got to ride around from one great location to another via wonderful roads- and now most of us are back at work earning wages to pay for our fun. Was it worth it? ....

Oh yes :.) !
Its funny....I walked past the bike today....I thought, Hey! Maybe I'll go for a ride......Then it occurred to me.........Where would I go?.....I kept walking.

"Trench Foot"

I almost had to withdrawn during the first leg in 2007, my calluses and skin on my left foot where coming off because my boots never dried, very painful to walk, luckily the last night of Leg 1 I was able to get my foot dry and my boot aired out on the a/c. I learned later that newspaper makes for a good material to stuff in your boots while off. I had did the IBA hotel the night before and never removed my boots, bad move. So when I got back to St. Louis for the checkpoint my feet were not an issue, I always removed my boots at rest stops after that.
