You forgot "I call upon Jesus."

He's this guy who lives just down the street from me, and he's got a pickup truck with a complete tire repair/replacement shop on the back. Call him up, he drives over, he'll look at the tire and determine if it is safe to patch, and if not, he'll slap on a new one. I've watched that guy change the rear tire on a goldwing in 5 minutes. And best of all, he charges 5 bucks over cost for tires, and 1 beer per hour for labor.

Chris

That guy's never home when I go looking for him.

In times past on lesser machines.........I have sticky stringed a tire or two and rode it til it died. With the FJR and the sometimes insane speeds it attains, I would have to ask myself.........is the bike and my life worth $200? perhaps its just old age..........but today I would be heading slowly down to the nearest shop for a new shoe.................

We all accept a certain level of risk just riding these things. I guess I've just accepted a small additional level by riding on plugged tires. And I think it's very small. I don't do sustained high speeds any more. I decided a few years ago that anyone can point one in a straight line and twist the throttle. I find an insanely crooked road to be more challenging and much more fun ;) Besides, the big tickets come with the high speeds; I almost never meet Officer Friendly on those crooked roads.

Oh. One additional thought. A man I know an trust told me years ago to give those string plugs a couple of turns before pulling the took back out. That winds it around the tool inside the tire and wads it up behind the hole when you pull it out. I'd never lost one anyway, but I've followed his advice, and the plugs are wadded up nicely when I pull the tire off to replace it. I don't know how the heck one would get out.
