North Richland Hills,
I see there's some folks on the map here from Louisiana, and I suspect quite a few more have been to New Orleans...

My son get to go with the Univ of Hawaii football team, support staff, band (He's in the band) to the Sugar Bowl.

He asked me to ask my friends where' there are some good jazz clubs, eats, etc. etc. etc. near the Louisiana Superdome?

the kids are really excited about going, although he's been to LA before and didn't really care for it, this time is different.

I did tell him my friends are OLD, at least according to his standards... he's 23 and we ain't <LOL>

Seriously, any good places around there (they're only getting $45 a day for food, tho)

He's a music composition major/trumpet player and would love to hear some good jazz, any suggestions?

I've never been to Louisiana at all, so I have no idea where are good places, and where are the areas they should stay away from..

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Many thanks,

Mary

there's a good jazz club down on jackson square but i can't remember the name of it

up until hurricane katrina, my family had spent practically every new year's in NO at the sugar bowl

Go towards the river down Canal Street, when you're almost at the river, turn left into the French Quarter. It almost doesn't matter where you go from there, as long as you avoid the obviously seedy strip clubs that exist here and there.

That would have been very cool, NO is one place I always wanted to see.

My son is extremely excited to be marching at halftime.... which is kinda funny, he's played solo trumpet in front of 50,000 people (Drum and bugle corps) and didn't bat an eyeball! <BG>

thanks

Well, he can't miss them if he makes it to Bourbon St.

I would recommend he take a look around the French Quarter in the morning. He can practically find some decent jazz bands out on the streets in Jackson Square. There will be plenty of fliers posted around for him to pick and choose.

He's gotta try Cafe du Monde one morning for some begniets. It's near Jackson Sq on Decatur Street. They serve 24 hours a day, so he can have breakfast any time.

I wouldn't say there are any specific places he should avoid. Any street in NO can get him in trouble. As long as he uses a little common sense to avoid the scam artists he'll be fine.

OK, I'm sure the school has put out info as well, but I will send him this and have him tell his friends...

Anyone selling anything on the street would be suspicious to me... and I'll also tell him to tell his friends to watch out for pickpockets.....

He did go to London with his high school band to march in a New Year's Day parade...

On an outing to a big dept store, he managed to give his group the slip (said he was tired of the girls dragging him all around the store looking at clothes!)

Chris was looking at some electronic stuff and realized that a pickpocket had his hand in his front pants pocket...

Chris did have his cash and id in a holder hanging around his neck, so no biggie... and he's only a skinny 5'6", but all muscle.

I guess the guy wasn't a very good pickpocket... because Chris said he really doesn't remember exactly what he did or yelled, but the next thing he knew, the pickpocket was flat on the floor about 10 feet away from him and scared as ****... he scrambled up and took off. Chris said the people around him were looking very strangely at him!

Did I mention my kids took jujitsu? I guess his training paid off!

...and there was the time his older brother was getting beat up in TJ by some skinny Navy dude, and the Mexican police came...they threw the sailor in the car, and told my son to take the girls back to the border and to the trolley stop..... ummmm....

I guess I don't need to worry about my kids!

We never have just a simple trip... we always have adventures!

Sometime I wonder if that's a good or a bad thing....
