I hate to bring this up.

I keep getting a bunch crap from my Wife and relatives in regards to our safety in Mexico. I continue to tell them that there is nothing to worry about because the violence is near the borders. I also state that Motodiscovery has done many tours in the past, so they know what places are safe and what is not.

However reading Skip's email it states this: "I'm excited about our first ride through the Sierra Madre to the Sea of Cortez part of our even bigger commitment to a region that is opening up even more roads and riding opportunities for us to explore."

Now if I could carry weapons into Mexico I wouldn't be as concern about our safety. I'm sure Skip and his team are familiar with most of Mexico, but how about the parts that are new to them as stated above? I'm not trying to get caught up in this whole Mexico violence drug crap, but since I'm not familiar with the country what do you more experience Mexico going amigos think?

Hola Chris, I also sent an e-mail and placed a phone call with Skip and Nancy; I will send a second e-mail. I really hope to feck that we ARE NOT crossing at Ciudad Juarez, that town scares the living hell out of me; and I have been riding into Mexico for 44 years now. Muy Peligro, hombre!!!
I already sent mine saying I would cross there.

I hope I don't have to do it by myself...

Although I'm not extremely experienced my one experience of 2 weeks in the Copper Canyon area was very positive. At no time did I ever feel un-safe there was a couple of times we were somewhat cautious like right after we exchanged our money.

I'd be willing to bet this isn't Motodiscovery's "first" trip into this area. No tour company is going to take customer into an area they haven't scouted in advance. Not just for safety but for routes, accommodations, food and attractions.

If I, a person from Minnesota decided that Georgia was un-safe to visit because of the murder rate in Atlanta would that make sense? Of course not. I'd even contend that the streets of Batopolis are far safer that the streets of Atlanta.

Here's a internet time waster for you a thread on ADV "Is Mexico Safe?" the link is to the last of 158 pages but at the bottom is a couple of good recent articles about travel in Mexico ADV.

Mis Muchachos,

Tucson Jose and Papa Chuy are going with Option #3! I am spending Saturday night, 11/6 at Joe and Cec's casa en Barrio del Tucson, Arizona. Joe and I will be on Interstate 10 by 0600 and at the El Paso hotel by 1100 hours.

We will then ride with Senor Barak Naggan of Moto-Discovery to Santa Teresa, Nuevo Mexico (aka San Jeronimo!) and do all of our paperwork on Sunday afternoon 11/7; both El Banjercito y MEX Turista Carta, Con Mucho Gusto.

Recuerdos y Suerte,

Tucson Jose y "El Burrito Ballerina"

"Amigos,

Good to know that many of you are pursuing getting your documents in order in advance. Please not the following which should allow you to continue with the process:

1. What border crossing?

We will actually be crossing at Santa Teresa, New Mexico at what is referred to as San Jeronimo ( sometimes spelled as San Geronimo. For purpose of electronically applying and paying for your temporary importation permit in advance on line, note the border crossing to be Km 30, Cd. Juarez. This is according to instructions from Albuquerque office of Banjercito/Consulate. We should be able to pick up the permits at San Jeronimo, if not, we have to pass through the processing office 30 KM south of Juarez anyway.

2. Cutting it close on time?

If you will be on the road, if you are in Canada, if you fear that you will not get your permit in time, feel free to enter MotoDiscovery address and we will bring it to El Paso. If you fear that you do not have enough time to get it sent to MotoDiscovery, then simply abort the on line application process and we will do it at the border.

3. Are you arriving early?

We will orchestrate a ride/drive out to the Santa Teresa crossing to get permits the afternoon rendezvous (November 7) at 1 p.m. You will need to have all of your documents. If you have your motorcycle in a vehicle or on a trailer you can leave it loaded. Inspectors will only want to check serial numbers, if even that. But you should have the motorcycle just in case they opt to perform that inspection. As a reminder, if you are one who keeps a firearm in your vehicle, be certain to leave it behind and not cross the border with it in your possession. While this process usually does not involve any inspections because we are not going into the interior, one ever knows.

4. A recap of my choices!

Apply on line and receive via courier your sticker ( but allow enough time!)

Arrive early, have all your documents and we will do the application process the day of rendezvous

Not necessarily ideal because we want to save some time, but failing any of this we can easily do it the morning of our departure, November 8...and those individuals will be responsible for beer supplies for the entire ride..ha!

Any questions? Feel free to call or drop me a line. This is our first attempt at utilizing online application process. It has actually been available for sometime however it appears that the online system is finally "mature" to the point of being pretty user friendly after an initial rough start.

We hope you are as excited about this as we are! Look for additional communications from us over the coming weeks.

Saludos,

Skip Mascorro

Special Note to those renting: Pat Wendt and Paolo Illing

We will attempt to process the vehicle permit on line for the rental you will be riding. If we succeed, I need your permission to pay this fee (approx. $55) with your credit card we have on file.

Just did the temp tag online. I used Km 30, Cd. Juarez as directed by Skip.

Note: They will not mail it to Motordiscovery unless you can sign for it there.

Here's what's on my receipt from Banjercita:

IMPORTANT: The temporary import Permit will only be delivered by courier service to the importer´s defined address; the person who receives the Permit must show the credit or debit card used for the payment, and an official signed picture ID (passport, resident alien or Certificate of Naturalization). Banjercito will not be responsible for the in time delivery of the Permit if the importer or the designated person to receive the documents is not available at the reception address

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Jerónimo,_Chihuahua Oh real nice, Russ; now you have got OK Petey all pissed off at us! No Worries Mates, no one in our group is crossing at Ciudad Juarez. We will be way West of that cesspool, to do our border crossings!

This was sent to our CHRIS_D of Georgia by Skip and copied to me; Joe and I are still just getting our paperworks done on Sunday afternoon 11/7 at San Jeronimo, Chihuahua, Mexico.

"Hi Chris,

Thanks for the notice.

The truth is that I have never heard of nor do I feel that any instrument or process is available through FedEx to implement this according to these instructions. I feel that Banjercito is mentioning this according to a process that may be commonly used in Mexico or elsewhere, but that I've never seen here. We are on first name basis with Fed Ex delivery guys here at our office, have received some pretty "high value" envelopes and have signed for many thousands of dollars worth of packages in behalf of a race team we are affiliated with in Mexico, without issue.

If anyone is uncomfortable with delivery to our office, and feel that you will not get the document in time, then abort the process and we'll manage it on the day of rendezvous. To avoid further confusion it would probably be best to post me a quick note before sending any other info on the forum. We are trying to coordinate getting info out and this could confuse or complicate things a bit.

See you in November!

Saludos,

Skip"

Sorry folks I jump the gun. I too was wondering how the Fedex would be made responsible to check credentials.

I think I am going to join the group getting the permits on Sunday Nov 7. There is no time to get it up here to the Great White North and I am just more comfortable getting the paperwork on Sunday. I plan on being in El Paso early so this should work out.

Brother Bill, I should have Verizon Cell Phone coverage all of the way across Southern Arizona and So. New Mexico on Interstate 10; just give Joe and I a call around 1000 hours and we will do our final coordinations; not 100% certain if we will run into El Paso, Texas first, or just head straight down to Santa Teresa, NM (no backtracking then!) and meet the crew there. Both our dual sports will naturally be strapped down on the trailer behind Joe's truck. Don Stanley 480-440-4666

I'm with this program as well. I should be in El Paso by noon on Sunday, so I guess we can meet at the hotel and go get this done.

Buenos dias Scott, If this is the case, Joe and I will also come straight to the hotel and team up with you and Bill for the run over to Santa Teresa. This is gonna be fun...

Dealing with bureaucrats is not exactly my idea of fun but it is a necessary evil that will lead to lots of fun afterwards.

Look at it this way, Bill: It is better than being at work! Oh wait a minute, you and I are both retired; and, do nothing all day but ride our motos and feck off Oh, how I pity those poor working Bastards! Ha, ha!
