Perfect. For me. For tonight. For memories of and on the planet. For losing Andrew to himself. For the melancholy. And for the starkness of night skies and freedom.
I didn't know we had a poet on the forum Well said.

Didn't know the guy, but have read of bunch of his posts. My youngest brother succumbed to the darkness in the world, and just couldn't see the stars and moon within the darkness. I feel for his family.

Beautiful photo, Mr. Niehart.

When I made my intro post, back when this was the fashion, he was one of a few folks who posted a welcome to the forum to me. And we lost him so soon after, I never met him, even though he was just up the road. Damn.

And that's a great picture, too, Dave.

Five days later, Mike.
He was an enthusiastic guy, among other eclectic traits. That's part of what struck me about Dave's posted pic above. That barn is an assembly of different pieces, sided in different shapes and directions, improbably pieced into one structure under a cold and immense sky.

Andrew got the dual sport thing going here and both started and named FODS. His RRs were legendary, but he also posted the first dual sport RR here. Several of us bought dual sports in part due to his enthusiasm and camaraderie. If you rode with him even once, you probably have an O'vale story, or at least recall something he said that was thought provoking for some time afterward. Ten years ago, we bought new '05s a month or two apart, but I first "met" him late one snowy winter night in 2006. I was living in Gardnerville when he called from the other side of the Sierras just to shoot the **** for a couple hours. An amazingly generous guy, with everyone it seems. Except himself.

Very expressive with a camera and his prosaic descriptions, old barns were his trademark. And our bitter-sweet reminders of a really good guy.

OVale introduced me to Kalifornia with his RRs.

Loved his riding photos of groups/strings of FJRs...

..a certain photo of the Avenue of the Giants also comes to mind.

You know, I've never been exactly to where OVale was in the simmering below the surface, but I was damned close during a period of time.

About 8 years later, I got into FJRs and touring. Touring is my safety/pressure release valve. Even though I probably can't afford time to go to SE Ohio and ride this upcoming weekend, my personal health demands it.

I met Andrew through the forum and we ended up having several telephone conversations about posting pictures. He invited me to stop and spend the night at his home at anytime. I wish I had taken him up on the offer. Reading his posts on the forum was always very entertaining. I was shocked at his passing and feel we all lost a great human being.

I've used up my likes today but I like this for many different reasons... I think of Andrew on almost every ride I do because there is almost always a barn along the way... he said he wondered what tales those barns would tell if they could talk... and I can't help but wonder when I see one, what stories it would tell... and so he still rides with me. :)
