I have been a member for several years now. Don't hate them. Don't love them.
As far as I know, I think they are about the only organization lobbying and vehemently defending motorcyclist's rights. THAT I do think is extremely important and is why I keep renewing. I don't always agree with all their positions or philosophies, but still believe they do more good than bad.
Ditto.

same here been a life member for many years even though I didn't race AMA events. They are the only ones out there defending the rights of all to ride. With the new CEO, they have finally started to focus on that. Even now it is a more uphill battle than ever to keep off highway riding areas open, keep it so you can ride on public street. There are many groups out there trying to stop you from riding anything anywhere.

Actually got a written (well, printed) response. But not from the AMA. It was in with the pile of mail that we got when mail delivery finally started again after the blizzard. Apparently, they contract with "Nation Safe Drivers" in Boca Raton, FL for the Roadside Assistance program.

Here is their response:

"I am sorry you had an issue with our roadside assistance. This level of service is completely unacceptable for any customer. I have put in a formal complaint for you and we are addressing the issue. We appreciate the fact that you are giving us the opportunity to examine why your needs were not met. Please except [sic] our sincerest apologies.

Sincerely,

Ayssa Sanchex

Nation Safe Drivers"

Never heard of them. Wonder if the 'formal complaint' will amount to anything. Or if the AMA will respond, at all.

That's a clerical error. Your app must have been processed on a Monday.
No, they did engage in some relationship with B of A for a period and quit. While I'm impressed they manned up and admitted it....I think they're still lost.
Oh, hell. You're right. The BOA reference fired a fading neuron and I remember getting those mailings too.

Still, my overall sentiment is the same as Skooter's.

Just FYI...

Still no response from AMA about my most recent (this year's) Life Membership & Roadside Assistance question. Apparently it's still not a topic they care to discuss in writing.

Sorry guys, but I'm leaning more and more to the "no incumbents" policy for AMA too. It wouldn't kill them to send me one freakin' email each year, even if it's simply to say "FO for one more year".

Several years ago I manned-up and bought AMA Lifetime Membership. It was expensive, but I was forced to pay AMA every year in order to race. Never felt that I got anything personally from being an AMA member.
I emailed AMA shortly after they started the RA-included promotion to ask... "How does someone who is a Paid For Life member and who is currently paying each year the additional cost of MoTow, get added to the new, free program?"

Uhhhh, Mr. Ashe, we currently do not have a solution for members in your situation, but we're working on it and will get back to you.

Wanna guess what I've heard from AMA???

:)

I still pay my MoTow every year. I ask the same question every year when I send that payment. Same results.

AMA may have their sights in the right direction, but somebody needs to get off their ass and take some steps.
Hey Jeff,

It seems to me that a lifetime member should be permitted at least the same benefits of any other (non-lifetime) member, such as me. To that end, I wonder what would happen if you made that case to Rob Dingman directly. He seems like a particularly level headed guy, and not unapproachable, from outward appearances. If you sent him some direct correspondence explaining this position, I'd certainly be interested in his response.

I really can not figure any logic that would allow them to exclude lifetime members from receiving all current benefits (including roadside assistance). Even if it means increasing the new membership fees to cover the legacy lifetime guys, hey... that's what they should do.

This just in:

"Former American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) board Chairman Dal Smilie has been sentenced to eight months in prison and two years probation for embezzling more than $100,000 through fraudulent travel reimbursement."

Great idea. Called and spoke with his assistant to get an email address. Couldn't get Rob Dingman's, but got hers. We'll see. Message sent.

Would like to know too. As I'm in the same boat too.
