Apparently i was bit by a tick. Big ******' deal!. But as a result I ended up with both viral menningitis and Lymes disease that has had me hospitalized since July 10 with several days to go until diagnostica and treatment plans for home-care are worked out. .

at this point the doctors say I have Lymes and viral menningitis and am being treated aggressively with intravenous antiviral and antibiotic medications. I have had every test in the book, spinal and brain MRI scans, CT scans, full cardiac workup and neurological exams. MY medical team includes specialists in neurology, cardiology, infectious disease, pulmonary, and others Most are leaders in their field with degrees from John Hopkins and other medical schools.

My symptons created a Dr House kind of scenario as conflicting symptoms presented...numbness in hands, pain in abdomen, progressing to numbness from my chest to the belt line. During the first night in the hospital 7/10 I developed Bell's Palsy in the left side of my face. it has progressed to bilateral. This causes severe double vision. I'll be in the hospital anotehr day or two then expect over a month of in home intervenous therapy. I last rode July 3 and can't wait until I can do it again, but my riding is hopefully just temporarily retired.

I'm not looking for sympathy, but I have a number of friends on this forum and this is the best way to let you know what has happened to me. Stay well and ride far.

Tom

Crap Tom! Hopefully they can nail this down pronto and get you back on the road to 100% wellness. The bike can be great medicine if used as a treat when you are recovered. Please take care and have a speedy recovery.

As someone who spends quite a bit a time in the bush dirt biking this is scary stuff. Get well soon and hope to see you on the road.

Back in my twenties I told the doctor I had lyme desease and he refused to believe me. He even refused to do a test. Hadn't been a case in 20 years he told me and that it was just a virus. Well fooook him, 2 months later it was front page news in the paper that lyme desease was back. After suffering severely for weeks i started getting better. Still had back pain for years. Still to this day I think i have some on & off symptoms. It wasn't long before my former doctor left for another state down south.

To this day I DON'T TRUST DOCTORS !!!!!

Sorry to hear this. I don't anything about the meningitis but I didn't realize that Lyme disease had gotten that far west. You are in western PA, right? Around here it is more common and I get tested every year as part of my annual physical. I wish you a full recovery.

Sorry to hear this Tom, hope you are 'up and about' soon.

I was reading an article recently about ticks and Lyme disease. Apparently, with our changing climate, new species are cropping up where they haven't been seen before.

In this area of BC they are an annual problem on animals and people (in short pants).

Sorry to hear about that Tom. Yes, Lyme disease sucks badly, and the treatment sucks nearly as much.

For those who are not aware of this stuff, you want to watch any tick bite sites very closely. If there is a redness indicating an infection, especially an annular ring, go get the antibiotic treatment. It sucks (the treatment) and will make your joints ache and you'll feel like total ****, but it still beats getting the disease, and they cannot accurately diagnose the disease from blood tests until it has progressed too far for the easy treatments.

Deer dicks (the itty bitty ones) are most often the carriers. Between running into them occasionally and them harboring the disease for the ticks to transfer, I think we need to do to the deer what we already did to the buffalo so many years ago. They need to be added to the endangered species list.

Get well soon.

Those ticks can sometimes be a PITA

That's what you get for posting messed up pictures of me on the internet...Karma's a *****...Right??

Ok...Seriously, that sucks. However I had a good friend get bit in Georgia, at a tactical rifle match, and get Lyme disease. She had a Hellavua 6 months, but recovered fully and is back to winning matches and teaching Ballet.

She was really worried about the joint pain and double vision as those affected everything she loves to do.

Here's hoping you will be 100% soon.
