Fork Noise - KerClunk '05

Yep, she's an '05 with approx. 6K. I bought her with 900mi.

Just within the last week front forks generate very noticeable

Ker-Klunk on moderate to heavy bumps. This is felt all the way

up the bars. Front end 'seems' soft.

What's up wid dis? I'm reading about spring changes. You tellin'

me I gotta swap out springs at 6K ? Hey, I've not had her on the

Motocross track, seriously. Can a techno-nerd do this or is it a shop

thang.

Please advise. Giddy with anticipation..................

Check the obvious; steering head, pinch bolts, wheel bearings, fluid leaks from the fork seals, etc. Someone just had a brake rotor problem, IIRC. Most likely, it ain't the springs themselves - they would have a much higher service life than 6k, fer sure.

If these checks yield nothing, start slingin' some poop at it. I here you ape types do that when frustrated.

You're absolutely 100% correct. After posting (still daylight on the Pac-Coast) thoroughly examined the front end. Steering Head Bolt loose! What da Fu** ! Rolled off lightly at the end of my fingertips. Loosened tree tightened head bolt and torqued down tree. All's well.

I have an 06 that has made the clunking noise also. I figured that it was due to the fact that the steering was loose. On Tuesday I went out into the garage to tighten the front end. I decided to check the Steering head nut and sure enough it came off with my hands. It also did not have the washer that is supposed to be under the nut. I have to tell you that this sucks. I would advise everyone to check this.

Hmmmmmmmmm.... was this a common error? When I took delivery of my '05 in '04 I noticed some extra noise in the steering. I grabed the steering head nut and spun it loose with my fingers. After cleaning out my pants and re-attaching my head in compensation of my fear and anger, I properly secured fasteners that should have been done on assembly at the dealer. When I took it back to the dealer a week later (when my broken glove box came in) I made a point to say something. He really didn't have much to say, so I never returned. Still worth the headache compared to my purchase price though. No dealer in Vegas would budge below MSRP. This dealer sold it for well below MSRP.

P.S. I have this feeling that the dealer broke the glove box trying to get it open without the ignition on..... yet another scar on my impression of this particular Yamaha dealership.
