looks like I'm in for a fork seal replacement. I guess I ought to get em both replaced while I'm at it - anybody who's had this done, how much was it? I don't feel like I got the skillz or the toolz to do it myself :(

If you can get the front tire off your bike you can get forks off the bike as well. In this case it should be under 150. I had it done before. It is really simple. Put the bike on the center stand and then use car jack under the pipes to prop the front up unless you have other means to raise the front not using forks as a support. Remove the brakes, remove the tire. unscrew what is it 6 bolts that hold forks to the triple tree and you are done.

BTW. If you update your profile and list where you live you might have someone in the area who might be willing to land a hand.

Depends. If you take it to your typical Yamaha dealer, I would guesstimate well over $200 for two seals. Find a local highly regarded motorcycle suspension shop and you are probably looking at closer to $150 for the same job.

My fork seals puked this winter (my guess is some water got in there and froze). In Cali, total damage was $347.00

2 oils seals @ 6.95 each = 13.90

2 susp oil @ 25.95 ea. = 51.90

2 dust seals @ 7.95 ea. = 15.90

2 metal, slide 1 @ 6.95 = 13.90

2 metal, slide 2 @ 6.95 = 13.90

1 NDA (listed under miscellaneous - maybe it's an "up yours fee" for posting their prices) @ 25.00

TOTAL PARTS = 134.50

PLUS

LABOR = 212.50

I have the parts numbers also if you decide to do it yourself.

I finally was able to find my receipt.

I didn't want to pay out the nose for the local Yamaha shop to do it, and I didn't know of any local shops with a good reputation. So, on the advice of a fellow forum member, I shipped my forks to a suspension shop in Modesto, CA.

He charged me $192 which included the return shipping. I paid about another $20 to ship the forks to him. So compared to above, I am quite happy.

I know he replaced the seals and bushings. He was surprised at the condition of my bushings. Something to the effect of "not much teflon left on them". But then these forks had 95k miles on them.
