forum software options

Does anyone have experience with any of the SimpleScripts based forum software packages - such as vBulletin, Simple Machines Forum, phpBB, bbPress, PunBB, or Vanilla Forums? I'm researching options for getting one set up on a hosted service and am looking for some feedback from anyone who's used these.

I'll ping my son, he's a web guy and is messing with that crap for a living (I told him, if IT, don't be as stupid as your old man (me ) and join IT infrastructure operations) he can tell ya a thing or two eventually.
