Found out the hard way

Until this weekend I had never used the accessory outlet. Friend wanted to add some air to his rear tire on his SV1000 so I got the Slime pump out. He accidentally turned the pump on before I got the bike started and I'm assuming it blew the fuse. The pump ran for about 1 second with the key in the on position and then stopped.

I have not pulled the panel to check the fuses yet but that has to be the issue. Surprised the surge from the pump took it out considering the pump is rated much lower than the outlet.

Looking at that panel "A" when this happened it looks like it might be a small PITA to remove so we opted to get help from a cager at that stop.

Oh well, lesson learned. <_<

So what about cell chargers or any other low draw accessories? Do you have to unhook everything every time before shutting the bike down if using the stock outlet?

Your Slime pump is rated at less than 3amps?? That would be surprising! Mine draws around 8amps.

There have been countless posts about not using the stock outlet for anything other than a cell phone.

Accessory outlet is fused at 3 amps. Way undersized for a pump. Your pump probably has an in-line fuse already, disassemble the plug to find it. That is the fuse amperage you'll need to use in the future.

The accessory socket is not wired to support a draw larger than 3 amps, do NOT install a higher amperage fuse in order to use with a pump - you'll risk melting the wires. You'll need to install a socket wired and fused appropriately in order to use your pump.

The acc socket is switched, and no, you don't have to shut everything down when turning off the bike. I've seen 'multipliers' used which allow two or three devices to power via the socket, just be sure that your total amperage draw does not exceed the rating on the socket.

Deeeer, just went out and looked. I didn't notice the decimal in the 2.5 on the socket cover before, guess my ******* thought it said 25 amps which I SHOULD have known better than that. The pump is rated at 15amps.

I routed the power cord for the slime pump from the battery up my handle bars and it just sit there ready to accept the slime pump when I need it. I learned the stupid lesson the hard way when I used this same plug to hook my Battery Tender to. It blew the fuse and I didn't notice it until I went to test the pump one day. Then in testing the pump, thinking it was bad, I plugged it into the accessory outlet and blew that fuse. A quick slap in the forehead with my right hand and I realized what I had done (typical guy, no read the funny manual that come with purchase of bike/pump/battery tender) and replaced the fuse in the power cord for the slime pump and it ran like a champ. I still haven't gotten back to replaceing the accessory outlet yet. I am going to route a new battery tender cable now. Stuff happens when you don't read the manuals. B) BTDT.

I did the same thing as you all. I replaced the battery connection for my battery tender with the one from the slime pump and access it through the right fairing for both the pump and the tender. This has worked fine for me and tucks away out of sight when not needed.

After blowing my glove box connector fuse, I put an accessory connector under the seat connected to my Blue Seas box.

Really?? I guess I didn't read the instructions, but I will never run my compressor with the engine off for fear of getting the flat fixed only to have a dead battery!

My Slime pump is connected to my BlueSeas box in the tail and I have always started the bike. My only advice for the Slime pump is, make sure it's on the ground and not on the bike cuz it gets really hot!

Yah... And you might want to wait a bit before disconnecting the hose from the pump (the one labeled "CAUTION: HOT!" in big red letters).

Damn it takes a long time for burns to heal! :blush2:

Remember when you use your slime pump and the battery goes dead, it is time for a new battery.

Pump should not run more than 7 minutes at one time ( read the instructions that come with the pump}

In that 7 minutes you should pump up your fjr rear tire and the reading should be 36 psi. I checked and timed before I went to NAFO, for a just in case.

And I had a new battery from Bikeffects about a week old.. :bike:
