Well it has to be better than the Sportster. I rode one from the SFBA to Atlanta in the early '90's and my ass still hurts. A lot of the older Connies are still on the road which says something about them.

 
..Ha ha... all the nostalgia.The best thing about having owned a Connie is having got rid of it and not taking a soaking!!..
I sold mine for much more than I paid for it.

While I owned it, I was very fond of it.

I had an '02 Connie before the FJR. Solid bike. Relatively bulletproof drivetrain. Railed corners once I put on a SuperBrace. Pluses over the FJR - slightly longer legs (got about 0.2 mpg better fuel economy and had a slightly larger tank, so 250 miles wasn't pushing the envelope like on the FJR), the same set of tires tended to last for more than 4K miles, and a used one should go for half (or less) the cost of a used FJR. Minuses - what everyone else mentioned, plus a lot more vibration across the entire rpm range.

As has been said, so long as you don't let him ride your FJR, he should be happy - It was a great bike for discovering the ST platform.

 
I wanted a "beater" bike to ride locally and save the miles on the FJR, so I bought an'04 C-10 a few weeks ago. Lots of extras and in excellent condition with 15k miles. After selling the Corbin seat and backrest, I probably have $3700 in it, if that helps you figure a price range. Bought it in Illinois.

I've owned 3 C-10 Connies. All great bikes. Hands down the best ST bargain. Very capable cross-country tourer. and still pretty sporty when the tach gets nortyh of 6K. No need to reiterate what the others have said about its characteristics. I think it's pretty clear. Just adding anothe thumbs up. Great bike.

Fred- I always referred to my '99 as the 'Barney" bike. I think the '95 is more burgandy than egg plant. FWIW

Concours C-10 -- "Heart of a Ninja."

Had both the 'Candy Persimmon Red' and "eggplant" (preferred the former color, greatly -- although the latter bike was probably better all 'round).

Another thing the C-10 has: is a quality, automotive-type, alternator -- far superior to the FJR's 'hash-up' in my opinion. :(

Well, my buddy picked up the bike for $4K and is very happy with it. He read and appreciated everyone's feedback. Here's a pic of him and the new bike:

Your buddy got a great deal - KBB has the value at $4750 and if you like what I termed BBB (Boring Bob Beige), that almost gold-like color that they were that year, then I suppose all is well with the world.

The Connie was a bit squirrely at speed (above about 110 mph) and it looked 'classic', the latter being why I bought my '03 - I loved the look at the time and so did lots of others out there (usually people pushing past 50, like I was). I ran mine hard and was able to keep up with the Busas and K1200 Beemers that made up our group back then - got a lot of attaboys for my ability to stick with a gang that likes taking things to the max. They'd lose me on the straights, but I'd catch up in the twisties.

I even still have some of my accessories around; a tank bra, a spare windshield a new dash cover (the rupper part of trhe dash) a set of the fairing edge trim, the special tool that Gary Murphy built for adjusting the tappets and so on. Gotta clean up and get rid of the clutter.

However, as others have said, if he gets on your bike he will not be happy for long.

That's the same thing my buddy told me when we switched bikes the first time and I rode his C14 - a revelation in terms of the sheer power and smooth shifting . . . . . not that my FJR isn't a good shifter, but the power delivery on the C14 is almost electric smooth.

If I were to change bikes this year, I honestly can't say whether I'd stay with the Yamaha or move to the Kawasaki.
