last week, while getting ready for a trip to the Texas Hill Country this weekend I decided to check my front brake pads on the '05 FJR, with 36k miles on it, just in case.

The left side pads were good and had several thousand miles on them.

But on the right side the inside pad was worn more than the outside and was about to the wear indicator.

So, jumped on the phone and ordered some EBC from University Motors and off I go. New pads stop much better.

Moral of the story - check both sides by pulling the pads out.

Tip on replacement - once you slide the new pads into the caliper, put the pin back in place without the cover or cotter pins and then squeeze the front brake lever to get pressure on the pads so it's then easier to put the cover, pin and cotter pins in place without the pads moving.

Uneven wear is to a degree normal, excessively uneven wear means it's piston cleaning time, a good idea whenever changing pads in any case.

Brake caliper cleaning

Now, you don't necessarily have to completely disassemble the calipers, just get the pistons out a bit and use a toothbrush and brake cleaner to clean up the grunge. But, if any fluid leakage, rust, or baked on deposits are present, bone up on brake calipers, and order up seal kits, you are about to enter the wonderful world of Caliper Overhaul.

Make sure you use a brake cleaner that is safe for rubber parts, seals etc.

Some will swell and eat up seals, O rings.

Does that model year have linked brakes? Could that be the issue? The less-worn pads being linked to the rear brake? Happens to Goldwings.
