Frustration obtaining an FJR1300

I'm an R1200RT rider frustrated with BMW service - MCN just ran a great article on the FJR1300 (although not as positive about the AE part) and I thought I'd run down to my local dealer to check one out. They had two, and both were AEs. I asked about a standard transmission one and he said "Not until May 2007."

Then I heard a long story about allocation, deposits (no big deal) and the long wait.

Are these things really that hard to get or am I just dealing with an uninformed sales guy? If they really were that hard to obtain, I would suspect supply and demand would kick in and the price would sky-rocket. But it hasn't ...

What's really going on?

 
You should be able to find an '06 on the floor at a dealer somewhere. Search this site and you'll find a few mentioned. If you want an '07 you'll have to order via the PDP and wait until spring.

 
I'm new to the FJR world too..... but had to hunt for mine for almost a month. You are getting the right info from the salesperson. Some dealers I contacted have NEVER sold one ever. Other dealers have sold many over the years. All are pre-sold and not in-stock so to speak. But sometimes you will find one that the buyer has backed out or the dealer has pre-paid for one under "someone’s" name knowing they can sell it. I found one in the Chicago area and one in FL then lucked out and found one at a dealer close by.

I have the AE model and it is for REAL! I would recommend you try it before you discount it. Many nay-sayers have NEVER been on one.

There are brand new bikes on the floors of many dealers. Trouble is, you may need to travel to get one brand new. You can call around. Others will pipe up with more info pertaining to this.

Another method: If you look in the classified section of this forum (& keep your eyes open there if there isn't one now) for lightly used bikes... '03's thru 06's that have already been bought, the owners find this is not the bike for them (for various reasons) & they are selling the bike... sometimes not even broken in, yet. I have seen a few '06's in the classifieds already for this model year. The nice thing is these sellers have already absorbed the initial depreciation hit that all vehicles experience when you pull it off the floor/lot.

This is a great bike. Hope things work out for you.

Chesterfield Valley Power Sports in Chesterfield Missouri has a 2006 AE and an A model on the floor as of yesterday. Great dealer, I've bought 2 bikes from them. Their number is 636-449-1500.

What's really going on?
Welcome to buying a new FJR in America. Yamaha, Cypress, has never really had their heart in it (as well as other manufacturers of sport-touring bikes). The market's just not there (in America). Air-cooled big twins (not to mention ATVs and dirt bikes) have way bigger sales numbers. When and until we get factory controlled dealerships for Japanese bikes, don't expect to see low volume selling models on dealer's floors. The dealers will continue to "cherry pick" the manufacturer's offerings and attempt to decide for you what you should be riding. Actually, you may be better off where you are with BMW? Many BMW dealers have, on the floor, a larger percentage of that company's models -- same for Harley-D.
 
Richwood Power Sports in Richwood, KY (Northern KY, very near Cincinnati) has an "A" on the floor. When I went there a month ago, they had two. The other one found a nice home with me.

Market not there? Yamaha sells EVERY single FJR that comes to these shores. They have a workable solution with the PDP (workable for them; I hated it) that achieves their desired results.

They have an good product at a fair price, providing excellent value for your purchasing dollar using any meaningful measurement like price/performance, ease of maintenence, dealer availability, or aftermarket parts.

With today's motorcycle market and the offerings out there, it's really hard to go wrong with any of them. It's all in what you want from a motorcycle. Whether it's the image and torque of a big twin, or the exclusivity of a name, or raw performance, or a price/performance target, they are all out there.

Since I'm an old sportbike rider (underline old), the only reasonable compromise, in my book, is the FJR. With Wilburs, brake lines, sliders, you know, the sporty shit. And a GPS. I love that thing. I still get lost, but now I get un-lost a lot quicker! :)

Sure, there are better touring bikes than the FJR. And there are faster sportbikes than the FJR. But there ain't no faster tourer, or a more comfortable sportbike, than the FJR. :yahoo:

Two questions:

1) I guess Yamaha dealers don't trade stock? I don't mind going a couple hundred miles for a bike, but FL might be just a tad distant for this CA-based rider ... Heck, I'd have to stop in TX for the break-in service ...

2) What's PDP? Some kind of allocation system?

Please elaborate on what you experienced with the Beemer to have become so frustrated, if you don't mind....
I'll reply privately with details ... but two of the issues are service cost (Even my Harley service is less!) and dealer scarcity. If you ride a Harley, you're used to dealerships every couple of miles or so. Trust me, there are huge stretches of the USA where they haven't seen a BMW in years ... I remember one Ironbutt in New Mexico ...

I wanted to hear stories like how it breaks down all the time on ya in the middle of nowhere or how you had to put in the shop for new tires and it took em a month before you got it back!
