I know most (sensible) people prefer to prop the tank with a piece of wood when doing TB syncs etc. but.............

I would like to be able to run the bike with the tank off. To do that I would need to extend the fuel pump power line. This shouldn't be a problem, Jim at Eastern Beaver is checking the connectors and should be able to supply.

The fuel line is a whole other ball of wax! Does anyone know where I can get a set of male/female connectors plus a length of fuel hose (EPDM). Or does anyone know what these things are called and who they are made by?

I do not know where to get the fittings but you can get quality high pressure fuel line at an auto parts store.

Are you thinking about putting long lines on permanently or just to use while the tank is off the bike?

 
I was just planning to add the extension when working on the bike, doing throttle body syncs etc. I know it's a bit OTT but ...................

Actually you can set the tank on a pair of saw horses positioned on the left side of the bike.

The fuel line will swivel at the fitting going into the fual rail and the fuel pump wires are long enough to allow this. just need a suitable stand for the tank. makes doing a TBS a piece of cake.

Removing the tank completely is way too much work.

Propping the tank is definitely the way to go. There is very little that you can not do with the tank propped.

I completed the valve check maintenance with it pulled back to the luggage rack with a tie-down strap:

Make that the left side of the bike (original post corrected) you'll figure it out. I don't understand where the "extra work" comes from with removing the tank, you don't have to do anything extra that you wouldn't have to do if you were propping it up. maybe it's different on a gen 1. As always YMMV

When you tilt the tank and prop it you do not have to remove the rear bolt, the two electrical connections under the tank, the high pressure fuel line or either vent line. You only remove the two bolts from the front and tip it back. Assuming the long rear bolt has been loosened a little previously (no need to re-tighten as it has a nyloc nut), you don't have to mess with it at all.

So long as the tank is about 1/2 full the engine will run with the tank tilted up like this just fine. In the picture above I have the tank tilted a bit further, to do the valve check. That only requires breaking the two electrical connections. Of course it will not run like that (no fuel pump power). I guess you'd need to extend that cable as well as the fuel line.

I just think I'd only remove the tank in extreme maintenance situations. It's a lot harder to drop it when it's still connected to the bike. As you say, YMMV.
