I had my('05 FJR) bike parked and covered all day(about 8 hours) today in 95+ degree heat. When I approached it to leave work, I could smell the odor of gasoline.

There was a small stain of gasoline below one of the over flow hoses near the center stand and the hose end was wet. The bike was parked on the side stand.

The fuel level was one bar down since had driven about 40 miles after fill up. I don't believe it was from expansion from the fuel in the tank.

I had ridden the bike only about 7 miles before parking it.

In the past I could detect a faint odor of gas at times near the bike, but never any real evidence of fuel on, under or near the bike.

My fuel mileage is normal.

Any one had similar experiences with your FJR?

Sounds like what my '04 used to do when parked it in the heat for a few hours. I never had any problems with it. A few others have mentioned it as well, and I think it is considered normal.

Sounds a lot like this thread

Roughly 1 gallon low (40 MPG) seems like quite a bit to expand to me though.

I routinely fill mine up on the way into work and drive 1.3 miles further, park on the center stand all day long and don't see this issue myself.

Keep us posted if you find a problem.

Sounds like heat expansion. When was the last time you serviced your fuel filler neck?

Hot fuel develops vapor pressure it has to go somewhere. Something about the carbon canister taking care of it. Well even the 06s smell of gas when stopped and hot. So much for the carbonne route!!!
Today before leaving work, I checked for the wet spot of fuel. I could actually see about 1 drop every 15 or so seconds. It is coming from the hose that runs down the left side from the tank. It is not the one with the red stripe, but the other one. If this is a vapor line, then it must be condensing back to a liquid while travelling down the rubber hose.

When I started the bike, it seemed to stop. If this is normal, then something should be done about it. A cigarette flicked onto the ground near the bike may become a problem.....

My 05 did this all the time. I could see the drops coming out of the vent hose and there was usually a small puddle of liquid below the bike. This happened almost all the time, no matter if the bike was only ridden a few miles or a 100 miles, and it did not seem to matter what the feul level was. If it was hot outside, it did it. This bike only had 1500 miles on it and did it since it was new. The dealer could not find any problem with it and said the vent was doingwhat it is supposed to do. My opinion is that the heat from the engine was heating the gas in the tank when I parked the bike and causing this problem. I solved the problem by trading the 05 for an 06 and I do not have any problems like this at all- :yahoo:

C'mon Homer, slap yourself again :)

Trade-in is not the answer (unless you need an excuse)

I know my 05 does not do this, even with a completely full tank

(then again I do have a CA bike with a slightly different setup)

Hopefully someone smarter than me will come along with some other ideas

I'm leaning towards the pinched hose and/or bounce's cleaning idea.

In the meantime refrain from flicking your lit smokes

Problem solved...

My bike is a non-Calif. model. I did notice there is a 1/2" vent line that is capped. It is located under the tank up at the front. I bet this tube is utilized on the Calif. models for the emissions system. I don't have a service manual yet (dealer I bought bike from says he's ordered it).

This could be a something to look at for an answer.

I don't smoke, but it is the other guy I'm worried about.

There's your answer. CA models have a canister between the vent and the outside world. You're overflow is caught in the canister and slowly evaporates from there (via charcoal). Everyone else's vent to the outside world. No biggie. Been running this unit since 10/2002. Before that I've had other bikes with hundreds of thousands of miles on them with the same vent tubes. It's a non issue.

Yeah, I believe you are correct sir.....

The last two days have been unusually hot for us up hear on Cape Cod. Once the heat passes, so will the problem.
