as of today, my work place will be closing down. They tell us 12-18 months before they let us go, most of us are thinking less than 12 months.

Whoo ******* hoo <_<

Sorry to hear that...cuz nobody likes the uncertainty...especially me. :(

To look at the silver lining in your dark cloud, atleast you have a little time to prepare.

In the consulting engineering world...your company may give you severance of 2 weeks...period.

If you are the owner of the company, you may get no notice...your client may just not call you again.

I'm NOT making light at all of your circumstance. Hope you are able to use whatever time you have to make a jump to a better tomorrow. :clapping:

Wow. I remember when I got laid off. My boss took me and my compatriot to lunch, and said "when we get back, you guys'll need to clean out your desks..." 122 employees to 6 in an afternoon. Not that people hadn't already realized CDROM drive prices had dropped from $300 to $30, so it was only a matter of time.

On the other hand, I ended up with a much better job eventually, so here's hoping that happens to you too. Good luck.

That sucks the proverbial balls!

I'm just uphill from you, sin. I find myself struggling to maintain a positive attitude here in our area when all I see around me is numerous friends and neighbors losing their jobs, struggling to keep their homes, or watching "For Sale" signs getting posted for all the same reasons. This all on top of my business being in a ********.

I said "**** It", voluntarily shut my doors for now, and now I'm just riding my FJR. Won't be able to do this forever but after being self-employed for 25 years, sometimes ya just gotta say "**** It!" I'm pretty happy my wife hasn't caught my attitude, though.

If I may ask, what firm and type of business are you involved in down yonder in Lompoc town? I have family there. Sister & BiL. BiL is a retired Principal, Sis still teaches Elementary.

I work at ConMed Linvatec in Goleta, my current position is Inspector / calibration specialist for medical devises, Inspecting close tolerance machined parts, electronic testing and keeping the buildings 700+ tools calibrated (by in house or sent to vender's). I just live in Lompoc, up near the "village".

Eeegads! I know a guy that I've done some hunting and fishing with over the past few years that's also a fellow rider(a Ducati guy) but in between bikes right now. He lives in Lompoc and works for a firm in Goleta and has a job that sounds nearly identical to yours. Eerily coincidental. I wonder if he's in the same boat? I'll have to ask.

Regardless, sorry to hear of your plight. I hope something comes up for you that takes/keeps you where you want to be before the other runs out.

Well Hell Daniel, although it's always nice to see you on the Forum, it would have been better under different circumstances. Sorry to hear about your employment difficulties, hopefully with your expertise you will land another position before your current employer even has a chance to let you go.

Yes it seems the Medical company's last HOORAH! is over. They had a layoff a couple of weeks ago where I work and are expecting another one in November. The funny thing is none of the temps got touched and they let go the permanent workers. Go Figure? They are getting hit hard with price reductions and the competition is starting to get fierce. They had a feel good session yesterdays for the employees and tried to explain there rational. It didn't go over well.

I hope all works out O.K. in the end.

Dan - Sorry to hear of this. Is there much work in the area or in SoCal for your type of work? Maybe you could start your own calibration house or something for all of SoCal or regional western states.

Good luck to you my friend, keep us informed on your status for finding work. ;)

Don't forget...They don't have to pay the temps benefits. Benefits are expensive.

Sorry to hear about your position Daniel. Just an idea, but take a look at some Aerospace companies and CNC machine shops. I know when my parents owned their shop, the inspector was well paid because she made sure everything that went out the door was within tolerance. What you describe sounds like what she did.

I'm sorry hear this :-( ... at least you have time to prepare.

My friend worked in IT for a medical device company in MN. Due to passage of ObamaCare and the medical device tax (not getting political, just rehashing what his company told him), the company didn't need his database design skills in the future and let home go. On the positive side, he got six months severance, rode a lot, then found another job, laid off again, and finally one he's been in a couple months. I'm actually a bit jealous he got to ride for a couple months ... !

Amen.

All the very best, Daniel.

Daniel,

Sorry to hear this news. My guess is that there is something better out there for you and in a few years, you'll look back at this as just a tiny little bump in the road.

Keep your head up.

Good words .... and mentioned before, use the guys here to assist in a job search Dan.

Hycle was unemployed a short while ago after 25 years, then landed himself a great job.

Hang in there.

Contact rmcobb from this board. He runs a metrology lab at VAFB and was looking for help not too long ago. If you've been calibrating medical equip and doing physical measurement as well you might have a chance. Don't wait. Start now.
