Last spring I had Avons put on . With a tire depth guage the front measured 5/32 and the rear was 7/32 . I wasn't too happy with the wear because the rear only lasted 5,000 miles . Just put on a new set of Avons today and the front was 5/32 ,same as before, but the rears now measured 9/32 . A 1/16 deeper tread than last years Avons . This new rear should last longer but why the difference ?

Can anyone figure out an explanation why ? Stumped

You don't know how to measure properly?

:D

Seriously, I can't believe Avon changed anything. Can't believe its QC as its just a mold. That won't change.

Did you get two of the different versions? There is the standard AV-46, and the AV-46B. Perhaps the "B" spec tire (which is NOT what you want for your FJR) is a different tread depth? Just guessing.

Measure at the same spot on the tire? Whatever tool you are using is it accurate?

I mean stuff like this usually comes down to operator error. So tell everybody your wife did the measuring. ;)

I think Skoot has it (for a change :D ) with the "A" vs "B". Makes sense a sport tire would have less tread depth than a touring tire. This and the fact it only lasted 5000 miles would make me think you got the softer (sport) version.

I hope thats true, as I just oredered some much needed rubber today.

I just checked my new rear avon that hasn't been mounted yet.

7/32" to wear bar, 9/32" to deepest section of tread.

And yes, I know how to measure properly.

I thought the only difference would be in the compound (and maybe construction), not a different tire mold?

I dunno. I am inclined to go with your reasoning.

That's why I wrote, "just guessing" above.

The old and new rears say both AV46-ST. No A or B .All other makings are the same.I always take the measurment down the center of the tire and the tool can't break or anything like that. It's idiot proof . Tool = https://tinyurl.com/ktuky

Maybe Avon has decided to give us more for the money.

I'm just curious if anyone has ever seen an AV46 A and B side by side and documented the exact markings on the tire that differentiates them . Because its doesn't say AV46A or AV46B.

There is no "A" variant of the AV-46. Just the standard and a "B" variant.

So it will either have "AV-46", or "AV-46B" on the tire.

I still find it hard to believe Avon increased the tread depth. In fact, way back when, a couple years ago, somebody verified Avon's claims that the rear tire came with a 7mm tread. Which works out pretty close to 9/32". So I think they have always been coming that way. Perhaps you mistakenly measured to the tread bar last time?

That is possible a year ago I measured 9/32 and wrote down 7/32 or measured to tread bar. I will really know if I happen to get a 1000 or 2000 miles more out of the new set . That would be great !

dunno - I just changed my rear Avon and put on another Avon.

I was disappointed because I "only" got 13,900 miles on the first Avon I put on.

And I was down to the cord when I replaced it.

Avons get my vote for many reasons.

Perhaps there is a slight variation in the molds. They probably have more than one. Also, maybe the mold is wearing a bit.

Or, maybe the temperature or tire pressure was different between the two measurements.

If Avon intentionally changed the tread depth they would be bragging it up in their advertising.
