I am thinking about picking up an 03 Fz1. It's only got 6500 miles and is mostly stock.

I have always wanted a sports bike, but I really don't like the riding position. The Fz1 seems like the closest thing to a sport bike, without the painful riding position. (I know the 2006 and up have a better engine, but I can't afford that.)

I also read this thread clicky, but it didn't really touch on performance.

I want to know from those who have both, or have ridden both, is the FZ1 really that much quicker and does it handle better.

I saw the posted quarter mile time for the 03 at 10.55. Not that much faster than an FJR, but 6/10 of a second is definately a difference.

As far as handling, I find the FJR amazingly capable in the tight stuff for such a beast. Do you all feel like your much quicker in the tight stuff on the FZ1 than the FJR?

Thanks

Keith,

I replaced my '01 FZ1 with the FJR.

I can tell you this much. The FZ1 is quicker and lighter. It does handle better and you still can spend all day on it.

I loved mine, and if I was able to keep it at the time I would have.

I had an Ivan's jet kit, air pump eliminator kit and Yosh pipe. Made a big difference in perormance.

I would recommend the 1st gen highly. It is a great machine.

I ride with two friends who have the 1st Gen FZ-1s. In a top gear roll on, they begin to pull my 05 at 110mph and I can't catch them. If we're both in 5th they pull me right away. In passing they always have to drop a gear, when I don't. I can't stay with them in the 20 - 30 mph twisties. The FJR has better weather protection and is more comfortable for touring, but for day rides the Fuzzy1 is better. They like the GEN 1 motor for it's midrange.

Thanks for the info

I used to think it would be stupid to have an FZ1 since it is essentially a mini fjr. The more I thought about it, I love the fjr, but want a second sportier bike that won't kill my back or my wallet. The GenII FZ1 or an r6 would be a better fit for what I want, but there is no way I will be able to find one for the price of this 03.

Here is a very nice R6... Small rash on it but still nice.

Well, I'll add my opimion to the others about the Gen 1 FZ1, go for it!!! I had an 01 which I loved & heavily modified. Now own Gen 2 06 FZ & just this week a Gen 2 06 FJR. The Gen2 FZ is a better handling sportbike than the Gen 1 but for all around riding, the Gen 1 is superior IMO. Larger tank on Gen 1. FZ1OA is a great resource for discussions on that bike. Enjoy.

I traded up to the FJR last month myself from an '01 FZ1. All the mods were on it too. Corbin seat, carb kit, front Galfer brake lines, tasty caron fiber bits, etc. It's more of a hot rod than the FJR. Handles quicker, little less stable, always needing to scream to make power. I loved it too, just like all the other guys. Never once failed to start. Never a mechanical problem. High speed vibration through the frame and into the bars at certain motor speeds though. I feel quicker on my FJR for some reason in the straights but slower in the corners. You can feel the extra weight on the bars during corners fighting you compared to the lighter FZ1. The motor is a real ripper and the star of that show! Real sportbike juice w/o the hunched over the tank position. Go for it. You will not for an instant be dissapointed!!! Boris 10

I had a silver 04 FZ1 w/Ivan's jet kit and a Yosh slip-on. Great machine. It also left all of the other riders taking the Experience Riders Course in awe, in how it handled the course.

Mine are both 07's and the FZ1 is great fun to jump on and go like hell. It's much quicker and very easy to throw around in the corners. The other advantage is that my wife can now ride with me. She loves how light the bike is compared to the FJR.
