Shortly after purchasing my FJR, I purchased Garauld's small tail rack and put over 39,000 miles with it carrying my gear for my wife's and my overnighters and multiple week trips. I had been considering getting a top case or a Pelican or Seahorse case to carry the gear I wanted quick access to. Got tired of things falling out of the side cases. But the top cases "seemed" to bulky and cost too much.

I PM'ed Gary and learned that he made a version with out the vertical stop and with lands mount in the corners. For a very nominal charge, he modified mine by removing the stop and added the lands - he turned it around over the weekend. In plenty of time for our Sonora/Ebbetts Pass ride.

The original rack:

The Seahorse SX-720 right out of the "box":

The bottom of the SX-720 has ridges on the bottom. It was quite easy to position the case on the rack with 1-1/2" diameter risers to keep the ridges off the rack. Great suggestion Gary!! I used hex button head 1/4" x 20 x 1-1/2" stainless bolts with lock-nuts and 1-1/2" fender washers. The bolts were cut to length so the bolts just came through the top of teh lock-nut. The risers are scrap hardwood 3/16" thick (that's quickly found the scrap pile) which were sealed with an acrylic finish.

I purchase some neoprene foam to make dividers for tools:

I had a set of yellow and red LED bars that I'd purchase for an aborted project which I attached using industrial double-sided tape. If I'd not already spent the money, I would have install another set of Hyper-lite 3-way LEDS but there are other "ideas" whee I can use the money!!

very very nice.

I like the new modified Rack much better -

Great job all the way around. The LED lights give a nice balance

Curious if you'll keep the hardwood spacers long term or go to some firm rubber or somethin' (?) Teflon might be the groovy ticket. Personally, knowing a tree gave it's life for your rack kinda warms my heart so I hope you keep them.

Finally, what will you use as a divider over the tools? Neoprene again?

Man, slicker that cat hair....I have a OEM Trunk, but what you guys are doing with these low profile trunks are truly remarkable/desirable.

That neoprene idea is really nice, probably would work with my trunk, and then put a uncut neoprene on top, and pack from there..very nice.

Thanks for the pics...and tutorial.

I used some scrap mahogany so it will most likely out last the farkle. So no plans to change, at moment....

Yep.

Very very clean. I may have to revisit a topcase on my 'o6. My problem would be figuring out how to attach a Pelican case (or similar) to the round stock steel in my Garauld rack with backrest...

I like the job you did.

:clapping:
