I have lifetime maps on one of my GPS's. I updated it yesterday.

I always thought lifetime referred to the unlimited map updates for the life of the unit. It took 6 hours to update my Nuvi 1350. It took what felt like a lifetime.

Yeah that's my hesitation with getting a deal something like this. Only for the life of the unit you currently have. Many people say the units don't last that long. I'm too new with only the 1 I've ever had to say...

good price though, especially if you recently bought your unit.

Cool. I think it used to be in the $100 range for lifetime updates. I was just thinking it was time to take a look at this. Much better deal now. I've got two units. Anyone know if it will cover both?

The way I understand it. It's per device. If the device dies, your SOL.

I had one free update to my Garmin, and used it. When I saw 6 year old neighborhoods still did not exist in the Garmin map, I decided my smart phone w/Google maps and POI's is far more reliable than the $$ Garmin product.

The Garmin is useful for pre-planned routes. I use my phone for everything else.

It wont. You have to buy 2 update packages to update 2 different GPS units. Each update is specific to a unit's serial number.

Negative, its only good for 1 serial # (unit). Its stil a good deal though. On garmin's site the cost normally is $90. I'm downloading it right now. :yahoo:

when you purchase a unit, check the model #

ending in "T" means it does traffic updates

ending in "M" means already comes with lifetime maps

prop worth it to pay the extra for the maps

Garmin is selling units now with lifetime maps and traffic for less then double what they want for map updates. You would think they will start to lower the cost of the updates and make it more reasonable.

Yep, you guys were right. I pulled the trigger for my 2720. Maps were getting old. Lot of construction going on with all that stimulus money results in a lot of wrong depictions on the screen. First download took 12 minutes. Thought I was home free. Not sure what that was but the map update took about 65 minutes. Still way better than 6 hours.

I know, but they HAVE lowered the cost of the add-on lifetime updates. $65 is a LOT better than $100+. It is an imperfect system. Garmin doesn't actually doesn't do the maps. They buy them from a company called Navteq. So every time you pay for a map update, it costs them money too. At least that is what they told me once.

I just wish Navteq was a bit quicker at updating the map database. We had a lightly used freeway open last May, and Navteq STILL does not have it shown. Once Navteq gets it, figure up to another couple months before it ends up in the next Garmin map update.

Clicky for Navteq website.

Question?

I have two zumo 550's (for now). I now understand that I can't get the lifetime update for both.

However;

Can I buy the 2012 map update disk, and use the one disk to update both the zumo's??

Any map software can only be unlocked for one unit. If that unit breaks down, even if it is out of warranty, Garmin will usually allow you to exchange the unit for a refurbished one at a cost of $100, and they will transfer the map authorization to that replacement unit. You have to ask customer service for that transfer at the time you pay for the replacement and send in your broken unit.

If you have multiple units to update and are not squeamish about pirated software, you can load the latest map upgrades for virtually any country or region. I have seen City Navigator North America posted on gpsunderground.com, before my legit copy was available from Garmin.

****, I just gave 89.00 for the Lifetime on my Zumo 660. Oh well the way I have been bleeding money recently what is 24 bucks among friends.

Oh and I ended up with Base Camp not sure about as I have not played with it.

I just updated my 2720 and 2730 for free at the link below.

I clicked on automotive and just followed the instructions.

I downloaded to my GPS units and to my computer.

I now have 2012 maps in both units.

The web site says free one time update until February sometime.

Not sure it will work with all garmin units or just my older units.

clicky here

Don't know how you got them for free? They charge for that. Had you ever updated either unit previously? They usually give you one 'free' update after purchase but I would have thought that would have expired on those units by now.

Using the link I gave click on "Automotive" A screen came up that said "hook up gps unit or enter the serial number of unit" I then got a screen that gave me three choices

1. Free onetime update (expiring in Feb. 2012)

2. Unlimited lifetime updates for a price

3. Onetime update for a price

I chose #1 and then got a screen that led me thru the download process for both units and my computer.

My units have never been updated before.

Years ago I called Garmin and tried to get a free update for my 2730(refurbished) that came from garmin with outdated maps and they told me the unit was out of production and I would have to buy the update if I wanted it. My 2730 was never updated.
