After all these years, you are coming over to the dark side and admitting you want a GPS system? Boy, what is this world coming to? ;)

I may be in the market for a GPS in 4-6 months, and the 2720 is a leading contender, especially if it will download routes from mapping programs on a PC.
The SPIII does that. Color, text to speech, it's all good. Cheaper too, I'm sure. Aside from the touch screen, what's the benefit of the 2720 over the SPIII?

It costs more so it must be better! :p

I hope Garmin doesn't play the retarded (I don't play well with others - game) when being able to upload information {routes} from other company's like MS Streets and Trips...

I hate that about other company's.... they just get greedy and want you to buy everything from them... If you want to sell more products, make it more versatile, and see what happens... why should we have to jump through hoops just to create a freakin map to get somewhere... ? I mean we already bought their product... for $800.

Or are they going to make the 2720 more versitile so more People would want to buy their products...

Im sorry about my rant... but why do they make us hack the darn thing...

just make it easier for us, and we will sing songs of praise about your product...

JMO...

Good question: You can log on to Garmin website and do a comparison on these two products for yourself and see why the 2720 is much better.

To start with, how’s about fresher map data and more points of interest.

Here is a line to Garmin website comparison chart

Here is a post from DKGross or David Gross from the other forum that answer the Garmin 2720 concern.

Hope it is o.k for me to cut and paste the post.

Subject: RE: GARMIN MapSource Unlock Registration

Thank you for contacting GARMIN International. I would be happy to help you

with this!

Good morning! I would like to advise you of something that is in the works here right now. In the next couple months we will be adding City Navigator NT v7 to the website to order. There will be no charge for this.

Once you have it you will be able to load routes from the computer to the unit. I would recommend keeping a keen eye on the website for this as we do not have a set date that it will be added. We currently do not have this software, but are working on it.

Thank you for your time!

Best Regards,

My understanding is that the 2720 is waterproof but does not have battery operation capability. This is important to me because I want a GPS that can be mounted on my FJR, used in my car or truck and as a handheld. Beginning to look like the 276C is the only GPS that will meet all my needs.

Lee in the Mountains of Northern California B)

For the those that are interested, the 2720 does fit in the enclosure that I sell. You can see it by clicking here.

My question is, does this unit have a hard drive or use Compact Flash cards?

Looks like its all built in flash memory, so no flash cards... and better yet... no HD

therefore everything is just loaded from the start.

Im thinkin that might be the one I will go for,

Which unit do you like better FJR4ME... the Quest 2 or the 2720...

Im leaning towards the 2720....

Im also hoping this technique will work for the 2720... because I like to use MS Streets and Trips

taken from another site... using a quest 2

Step 1: Create Route in MS Streets & Trips

Basically, create a route with MS S&T using enough waypoints to define your route. No need to go crazy here - the Quest will be recalculating your route, and routing should be similar in both programs, but make sure to put waypoints on those little country roads you've been drooling over - at least enough to have MS route you through them.

Copy the .est file to the folder you have extracted st2gpx into.

Step 2: Convert EST to GPX

Now we need to convert the Streets & Trips file to something the gps can read.

To make this a little easier for converting future routes, create a bat file called ST2GPX.BAT in the st2gpx folder

(for those who don't remember the wonderful days of MS-DOS, create a notepad file named ST2GPX.txt and paste the following into it:

st2gpx %1 -G %~n1.gpx

Now save the txt file and change its name to ST2GPX.BAT

Don't worry if it complains about changing the file extension.)

Now right click on your BAT file and click "create shortcut"

Now you should be able to drag and drop your .est file onto your SHORTCUT file (this tells it to execute the BAT without having to deal with command line. Lots easier)

You should now have a .GPX file with the same name as your S&T file. If it didn't work, make sure the S&T application is closed. (I did this too and momentarily panicked)

Step 3: Upload to the Quest 2

Now connect your Quest2 to your PC with the included usb cord. You may need to reinstall the included usb drivers - they seem finicky. I saved the contents of hte cd onto my harddrive so I won't need the cd again.

Start g7towin and use the configuration menu to set connect type to "usb" and output type to "mapsource"

Now file-open-(navigate to your GPX file)

Nothing seems to happen...but as long as your gps is connected correctly, you should have a new option under the "Routes" menu. Select "upload route to GPS"

Check your gps. You should *now have a new route listed in the Routes Setup menu. Congrats!

I would recommend for you to wait until the new update for the 2720 is available before you jump in.

You will need to study up on what it can or cannot do, and if it will meet your requirements.

I like the 2720 better then the Quest 2 because the software has more attributes for the 2720 with City Navigator and the Quest 2 use City Select which is a cheaper version of the NavTeq software.

Hope this information helps

don't mind my software hacking business, as I really enjoy doing that sort of thing... A couple of guys were using that technique with a couple free programs so they could use MS streets and trips, which is an awesome program..

FJR4ME

That sounds promising, now you said the update... does that mean that the software you can use to make your own trips... or does that mean that they will be updating the software on the 2720 itself...

cause if its just a download of the new NavTeq software then I can go ahead and get a unit and just download the version they say will be free on their website..

Otherwise Im pretty much sold on the 2720... its easy enough that Im not making all these huge trips like alot of the guys here...

I stopped by Best Buy and got to play with it a little bit, and I like what I see..

Other then that, I was wondering if one should get a garmin Motorcycle mount, or get an aftermarket mount like the RAM bracket which is the same as the 2610
ramholga9.jpg

and add on the power & sound cable for it...

anyone have any pics of these brackets, as I would prob customize an arm for either - off the handlebar riser bolts...

thanks for dealing with me being a PITA... :)

There are a couple of mounts posted in the For Sale, Auto Nav thread.

And don't worry about being a PITA. This is a good discussion, and that's what we are all here for.

If you're mounting the 2720, I'd recommend the Garmin motorcycle cradle. It works for the Streetpilot 26xx/27xx series. There's a built-in notch molded into it for the power connector so it will not vibrate off when riding. I've heard that the RAM cradle version is not as secure.

My final setup places the RAM mounts with the Garmin cradle on the left handlebar. I use an adapter + 1" Ram ball on the mirror socket located on the clutch reservoir. It's part # FJR1300MA from www.motorcyclelarry.com. The rest of the RAM pieces were purchased from www.gpscity.com. I try to post a picture so you can see it.
