Yesterday I downloaded the Garmin Updater from the Garmin site. The Updater program makes it real easy to get the correct software updates for your Garmin product. I went from Mapsource 4.5 to 6.0. Keep in mind that Mapsource is actually the operating system software, kind of like Windows is to a PC. I now have some new capabilities on my 2730 including a little musical note icon in the lower right hand side of the map screen which takes me directly to my music player control.

I think you're confusing MapSource with the firmware inside the GPS.

MapSource is the free application that Garmin provides to do trip planning and to manage your map database CD's and handle downloads of data to the GPS. It's like Microsoft Streets and Trips with GPS updating added on. It's an application (like Word) and nothing like an OS.

The GPS does have firmware inside it that serves as both the underlying OS for the GPS and the application running on top of the OS that provides the GPS functionality. I suspect this is what you went from version 4.5 to 6.0, since MapSource has been in the 6.0 to 6.10 range for the last couple years.

Updater just handles the whole process of keeping all your Garmin applications and GPS firmware up to date with the latest/greatest from Garmin so you don't have to do each indivdually.

Garmin does refer to the update as "Unit Software". It was a tech that told me that I should think of Mapsource as the operating system and City Navigator as the map data.

Thanks for the info. The music icon sure makesit easy to get back and forth. What else did you find on the updates?
The ability to input Lat/Long. I thought Skyway told me once that there were some other things but I have not found them. Maybe I just dreamt those "other things".

If you manually download the updates you'll see a list of what's changed from one version to the next on the update page. I'm not at my workstation, so I'm not sure if the manually downloaded files include a 'what's new' file in them or not . . .

Sometimes there are advantages to doing things the 'old fashioned way'.

You will be able to do all the updates for garmin this way?

the fellow on the other forum who sold the gps units (and was very helpful) suggested that you wouldn't be able to get free updates if you bought the units from places like costco.

There's no checking. You can get either manual or automatic updates no matter where you bought your unit.
