Hi Guys,

I can't find the friggen thread. go ahead and blast away, but I am in a hurry.

my locking mechanism on the gas cap was getting sticky so I took it off and apart, but when I put her back together I can't get the key out any more.

Can someone point me to the thread where this was discussed.

Go ahead kill me..

Thanks guys. 3 letter words search didn't work (GAS CAP) and fuel filler mechanism lock all brought too much wrong stuff up. Much appreciated.

So it seems I've put back together properly, but when I turn the key to unlock the cap there is a snap, and the key will not come out. the latch works though besides the fact that I cannot get the key out.

I know I can remove the t-shaped piece which will remove allow the key to be removed while the cap is open , and i probably will, but can anyone figure out why this is happening?

Anyone experience this?

Are you closing the cap before you attempt to remove the key? The key will not come out with the cap open...........

Here's how that key interlock widget works:

Refer to the following photo:

You can see the widget sticking out the bottom of the latch assembly in my hand. When the latch is positioned on the cap the widget pokes into the hole on the right side. The under lying metal in that hole is attached to the big spring loaded outer rubber gasket that seals the tank when the cap is closed.

If you push on the rubber gasket as it would when you close the lid you will release the spring loaded widget and the key should be able to be removed. If you can't get the rubber gasket to move toward the lid that would be why you can't release the key.

FWIW - I keep a copy of the Gas Cap Castration mod in my FJR Nerd's Repository . (just click the little nerd in my signature line)

I cussed the OE cap in a big, big way when I swapped out to the Oberon keyless cap. Dunno how I finally got it reassembled but the referenced threads would have been a help. I was too big a noob here at the time to admit what I'd done and seek advice...

When someone starts off with "Sorry to be stupid, but how do I ... ?", my usual response is "If you don't know, you'd be stupid not to ask".
Of course, with the bunch of ne'er-do-wells on this forum, you'd get a lot of stick, but amongst it all you might even get a good answer.

I simply removed the interlock piece and it's spring, and the cap works fine now. I can remove the key with the cap open or closed, but I cannot open or close it with the key out.

Good enough for now.

I am pretty sure I should have tried to reinstall the cap before twisting the key. But heck who cares. Now that my wife lost the spring I had left on the kitchen counter for all of 120 seconds whilst I went back to the garage for a minute, its history.

Live and learn (then live and learn, then live and learn.... I should have been out riding instead of fiddling)

^^^^^^I don't mean to laugh, but that sounds so familiar. I'm glad you got it working. Personally, I think locking the key in the cap is dumb. Sometimes I need the key. Lol.

Let us know how you like the cap operation like that after you have a chance to ride for a while that way.

I'm considering modifying mine to work like that. But like you observed, you still need to have the key in the lock to close it, so I guess it doesn't buy you much. I wish you could just push the lid down to close it like you can on my Honda.

I helped Reno John come up with a keyless cap option that vented properly way back when. It was important to him for fast gas stops when in mega-rally mode.

For me, a staunch CBA member, my pit stops do not need to be so fast. I still like the (relative) security of needing a key to open the cap and put things in it, but I do wish I did not need to leave them in there to close it later.

I'll have to compare the FJR mechanism to the one on my Honda and see if there is an easy way to modify the FJR one to do that
