Gas in oil

Mine does this as well. I drain the old oil and change the filter, I add 4.25 quarts and run it long enough to verify it's not leaking. All this is done on the center stand. If I don't ride it, the level will be at the top line in the sight glass after it all drains down and for as long as it takes 'til the next ride. After riding it, I pull it in, centerstand it, and wait. After it cools the level is always above the sight glass. And it'll be there every time I check it until the next oil change.

I've only changed the oil three times, but it's been this way every time.

It's not making oil. I have drained the oil and poked a hole in the filter to get as much of the old oil as possible, and I get within an ounce or so of 4.25 quarts back -- definitely not more.

I've seen this posted on this board and another enough times to feel this is just par for the course with an FJR.

So .... to the original poster. Have you actually measured the oil that comes out? If it's just above the window, that seems normal to me.

This doesn't address the question of the gasoline smell, but I just went out and sniffed the dipstick on my wife's car (that sounds oddly erotic), and I could convince myself I smelled gasoline there as well.

escapefjrtist suggested changing and using only four quarts and watch it from there. I think that's a great idea and a very simple way to figure out if the level is really rising our not.

Oy vay!

Step away from the sight glass and go pick up a shot glass. There are far more important things to think about than 2 or 3 ounces of oil volume.

I know, I'm just irresponsible and spreading ********.

I couldn't agree more. If it's truly getting fuel in it, that's one thing. But if it's just a little over the window, go find something else to worry about.
