gas line connector under tank

I tried to do search on this but came up empty.

The quick connect onthe gas line from the tak popped off the other day and left me stranded with gas all over my left leg. I also found out that the tool kit (?) does not have an allen wrench the correct size to remove tank front screws. Anyone else had this connector pop off. I don't trust it now even though it went back on with a resounding click. I have 4100 miles on my 07. Dealer says it is ok if I cannot pull it off. Does coming off by itself count? Think I will replace it just for peace of mind if nothing else. I had tank off at 200 miles to do throttle spring mod but am sure I connected things back tightly because I remember double checking that connection because I did not like the flimsy look of the connection. :glare:

Had the same thing happen doing my 2nd TB synch...had rags around and shut it off pronto! I had pushed/snapped the line on the fuel rail but in my excitement had forgot to also push the gray plastic locking widgit up over the fitting all the way on...kinda' like the time I hit the steel post in the yard with the lawnmower after the old man warned me about it...only took once to remember forever.

This is certainly the first I heard of this happening.

Was the tank recently removed for service - perhaps the 600 mi service where a TBS is (supposed) performed?

The fitting is a two step clip - and is very secure at both ends when installed correctly.

Review service work done - if the fuel line has been disconnected for some reason, I would suspect the technician doing the work - or perhaps an improperly fastened fitting from the factory - or perhaps a faulty connector?

Let us know what you find out.

I hate admit it, you guys are probably right...it was a technician problem and I was the technician. Let me make sure I have this right so when I get back into it this weekend I will know what the heck I am doing. I now gather that even after pushing the connector on until it clicks I have to push in the gray thingy to lock it? Correct? That is, I am sure, what I did not do after the throttle spring mod. Guess I am lucky it stayed on for 4000 miles. Thanks for the help.

First rule of troubleshooting - suspect what was done last, then work backwards.

And you are lucky it stayed on for 4K miles - that's a pressurized fitting! :blink: The plastic thingy slides over the release buttons to prevent them from being engaged at the wrong time.

 
First I have to say I was disappointed at PLASTIC connectors for the fuel; why the hell do manufacturers skimp on this part? You guys have to be extra careful to NEVER put any load on that part, especially as it ages, since plastic becomes brittle with age. This was an ongoing problem on BMW K1200RSs, and others, with the same plastic quick-disconnects, but those were right by our right legs, so a little easier to get at.

The first step is to carefully remove the gray safety plastic clip, then push the button and carefully pull out. Installation is the reverse.

And very important: when installing tank back to its normal position, you need to remove the left silver panel under the seat, and re-route the tank's vent/overflow line properly, or it'd make a mess in your bike. Once you remove the cover, it'll be obvious where the line needs to be routed. There's a bracket that it slides into, and then goes straight down pointing at the floor. Good day.
