I ride very conservatively and in the rarified O2 above 7k feet and regularly get 50-52 mpg by the 'pump math' on my 03. In stop and go downtown traffic I get about 44-46. I once got 182 miles on 2.3 gallons. That was from Leadville, CO to Montrose, CO via Carbondale and CO133. From Leadville at 10k, up over Independance Pass at 12k and pretty much all downhill from there to Montrose at like 4k. It was pretty amazing pulling into a station 180 miles down the road with 5 of 8 bars showing. LOL I let everyone else get gas, and rode all the way to Durango, coasting in to town just as I hit reserve. I think it was at like 290 on that tank.
It's amazing, the difference that altitude makes. Last summer, Santa Fe to Cortez via Chama, I went 240 miles without hitting reserve. Here, I routinely hit reserve at 200.

Hey.....we may be young and dumb but at least we're full of.........oh, nevermind.

 got back from 4,200 mile eleven day jaunt through Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico and Texas, just last week.

Just finished calculating gas mileage per tank, I keep all gas receipts and can accurately calculate mile per gallon for each tank of gas burned, to keep track of engine performance and any hints of problems.

Lowest MPG was: 36.06 MPG on one tank

Highest MPG was: 53.26 MPG on another tank

Average MPG for trip was: 45.16 MPG

Variations due to climbing to higher elevations (over 10,000 ft. several times), wind resistance (hit 170 miles of driving 60 mph dust storm), descending to lower elevations, speed driven (some sections I was doing a fairly steady 87 MPH as per GPS, some sections had 20 mph speed limits in series of curves and road construction.

Average MPG driving around home, to and from work is: 43.92 MPG

Warning: Thread drift...

Speaking of fuel milage, this one is for the Gen I owners....

How do your fuel bars break down, milage per, that is.

Myself, I get about 60 miles down the road before my top bar dissapears.

The rest seem to denote about 25-30 miles (speed and such dependant)

Here's the curious thing, and it irks me. Alot, actually.... the top 4 bars routinely get me 150 on down the line, and the bottom 4 get me 95-115. Why is there SUCH a difference?

On that note, has anyone determined how the guage works? Let's say I have a full tank. I ride a long way down the road and look at the fuel guage again. Now my guage reads 5 of 8 bars. Does that mean I have emptied 1/4 of the tank, or 3/8? Does the bar go away AFTER I use that amount (think of taking the cup away after it's empty) or does it go away as I dip into that 1/8? Yeah, I'm over-analyzing this but, hey, it's what I do.

...but then again I stayed within 5 mph of the speed limit.
What the hell? How did you do that? You get stuck behind a whole herd of cops?
The freeway through town is being re-routed and there is heavy enforcement. Each way on a 28 mile stretch there are typically 4 to 6 DPS vehicles, half beemers, and all with their eyes open.

I have about 43K miles on my 05. The first 6 fuel bars run between 25 and 30 miles per bar. The first one can go to 40 if the tank is topped off. The last two bars go 20 or less and then on to reserve. I average over 43 mpg over 43k miles with a high of 55+ and a low of 37. Commuting to work seems to be the worse. cruising with v twins the best

I'd have to agree with this totally. My commuting milage is around 39-40mpg wiht a 60 mile round trip every day. When out riding with my wife and her Sv650, I can manage about 44-45mpg while still having some fun in the twisties. Won't hear a complain from me as it's way better then the 32-34mpg I was getting from my Vmax while being gentel with the throttle.

Man.. on a good tank I only get 38 and my rear tire, no matter what brand, is shot by 3k.. What up wid dat?
I average between 36 and 40 mpg. I keep wondering if there is something wrong with the way my engine is tuned or if it's the gas here in SE PA. I would be so happy to get 40+mpg on a regular basis. Only time that happens is on long trips to rural areas in warm weather. Least I get 4.5k to a rear. One thing I've noticed, this bike likes to work, my gas mileage actually improves when its loaded up.
