I recently purchased Yamaha's new gel seats, found out about them from member Fattymoon, for my FJR as I am preparing for a very long ride. I Took them out for a three hour tour to get a feel for them and here is whay I found.

The seat fits (cradles) my but a lot better than the original, more like a touring seat. Although the seat actually feels harder to the touch, the ride was much more comfortable. They are probably not as comfortable as a custom built seat, but much more comfortable than the originals. I would recommend it for people that either don't want to spend the higher cost for a custom built seat or really want to keep the original look. In addition to the comfort, they give a little bit more hight between the rider and passanger seats which helps with rider scoot back.

The one problem I have with it is that when riding around town on a hot day( I live in the desert) , the engine heat seems to heat up the gel or something and your but can get very hot very fast. I will probably run with my original seats for local use and just put the gel seats on for highway use. I have thought about putting a piece of engine compartment insulation on the bottom of the seat to direct the heat back down, but don't know what ill effects this might have on the motor, wiring etc. and would sure appreciate feedback on that.

A three hour tour?? Be careful. Don't forget what happened to Gilligan and the skipper. (And Marianne, the movie star, the professor too, and the millionaire and his wife.)

Hi Philip. I second Sonic concerning the sheepskin. Mine are from Alaska Leathers too. Stella and I cruised around yesterday afternoon (poolside temp. read 110 degrees) and late this morning. Sheepskin kept things from getting hot. Highly recommended.

Hoe to ride with you soon.

I have to disagree on the so-called Yamaha "Comfort" Seat. After just 30 min. my butt was numb...I tried it on couple more rides before sending it back. Just FYI all butts are different. I now have a AM Specialties gel seat pad w/ sheepskin cover. Its an improvement but still not as good as I would like.

Wow, sounds like you might need to upgrade to a new but, I'm not sure what that will cost you though.

Have you got any information on the sheepskin, website etc.

Thanks,

Apparently I posted this in the wrong place as it was moved, sorry kind of new at this forum stuff, this topic says FJR specific and I assumed that since I was talking specifically about FJR seats that this would be the right place

Asnoted... https://www.alaskaleather.com/index.html Then click "Buttpads" then "Check What Sizes You Need" (Application Chatys) then Yamaha and then you'll note recommended sizes, for the driver it's a medium and for the passenger it's Pillion Type 2. I ordered the deluxe 1 inch so as not to have the shaggy mastadon look. Choice of color, Arrived in about five days.

Sounds like fun... does TWN hook that up?

I ordered a butt pad and recieved it the night before an 600 mile trip. 1" deluxe. Fantastic. The uncovered seat had numb bum setting in at about 150 miles. With the sheepskin, well, I don't know. It never did set in.

Speaking of gel seats. On my old bike I had one installed, was really comfortable for the first season it was in, the second season, I *swore* somebody took it out on me. Go figure. Anyway, gel, when sitting in the sun, gets uncomfortably hot, and seems to hold that heat for a long long time.

I ordered the sheepskin for my bike and we will see how it goes. It wont make it to me before I leave for my trip, but I had it drop shipped to my second night drop, so I will get a taste of it both ways.

Update on the Yamaha gel seat... It is more comfortable for me, yet, it's not a day-long saddle. Not yet. Maybe it needs more break-in? Have ridden maybe 500 miles on it. But, I think that, eventually, I'll spring for a Corbin or a custom. Was well satisfied with the Corbin for my Interceptor.

No matter what seat I end up with, I will always have my sheepskin. They keep your seat cool in the hottest temps. Money well spent.
